That looks more like a Winter Olympics logo. The zero looks like the profile of a mountain and London is fricking flat as a pancake (okay so it has some small hills).

They want something "fun and edgy" that is "more inclusive" and "less corporate logo" but also "will have legs and last 5 years". Basically they are marketing to myspace kiddies.

I suppose it is the best idea since the Olympics have become this huge money sink since Atlanta where even basic tickets cost a ton of money and corporate sponsors are more important than the athletes competing. Since the myspace kiddies are the new target consumer, why not get them hooked with a bad cartoon now?

The asshat in charge of the London Olympic comittee is trying a totally stupid idea for a traditional event. What he fails to see is that most of the people who are interested in the olympics actually LIKE the idea of a nice, clean, and consistent overall design theme. If you want to add flash and avant-garde ness do like Athens did: Hire Calatrava to design a never before attempted style of stadium, then add avant garde cirque-du-soleil inspired opening ceremonies. The "kids" are not going to become interested in the olympics simply because pikachu used your promotional materials as a jizz towel.

Avante-garde = con-man.

I was an art major before leaving in disgust. Artists are so completely full of shit to cover their utter lack of talent they could be politicians.

I meant avant garde in the traditional, more literal sense.

Not in the "Modern Art" bullshit sense you see in many fine arts programs.  The london 2012 logo fits into the mold one of those pieces of fecal matter.

Believe me, I have seen my fair share of crap "avant garde" theatrical designs that were literally a cover your no-talent-hack ass thing. But I have also worked with some true talents that take things in a new direction and make something "magical".

I wouldn't say it's "good" graphic design. It's the kind of thing that college art students come up with as their first pass attempt at a logo. It is better than the other one, though. I'm still confused by the "dot" (diamond) in there. I understand that it's supposed to be part of the "2" but it just doesn't look like it is.

HAHA! The olympics stopped being about the athletes a long time ago. Ever since Juan Antonio Samaranch (an actual fascist btw) took over the presidency of the IOC it's been rapidly turned into nothing but a giant, corrupt, corporate money-making machine.

Mascots and logos that provide no useful benefit but cost obscene amounts of money? Yeah, that's what the olympics are all about.

I'll keep half an eye on the boxing via the web to see if a decent heavyweight crops up, but basically fuck the Olympics. I don't even care about the bullshit world of Olympic amateur boxing. At all. It's just a talent farm.

I gather the China mascots were a marketing disaster, because to Chinese people they represent evil witch demons or something. Reading this served to raise my opinion of Chinese people.

Given that Olympics are designed as a competition to find individuals who are best in the world at doing something of no use to anyone, maybe this is a subtle metaphor.

Bring back the good old days of the Olympics with medals for poetry and sculpture. Also fuck the Olympics, when they're somewhere else I can ignore them, I do not want to be living in the same city they're going on in.
