The story seems a bit far fetched, just like the whole Hogzilla one. There was a Explorer episode on the National Geograpic channel a couple months ago, the pig was huge but not as big as the story said it was. It was also photoshopped to make it look bigger. The idea of an 11 year old kid walking around with a .50 caliber revolver seems suspect to me. If it is true, most likely they will find that the "wild" pig is actually either an escaped domestic hog or offspring of a domestic pig. There are domestic breeds that have been bred to be nearly the size of cattle. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Lantyssa on May 25, 2007, 04:26:42 PM If it is true, most likely they will find that the "wild" pig is actually either an escaped domestic hog or offspring of a domestic pig. There are domestic breeds that have been bred to be nearly the size of cattle. There are millions of feral pigs across the nation. They are, by definition, the offspring of escaped pigs. They've been around since the 1800's (and any new escapees). The only native pig-like animal in North America is the javelina.Farmers and ranchers hate them because they eat just about anything, tear up crops and grass, destroy fences, and breed like rabbits. Once they're larger than piglets they have no natural enemies and old boars are as mean as they are large. And tough. I've always disliked it when a pack comes out near me. Quote The idea of an 11 year old kid walking around with a .50 caliber revolver seems suspect to me. In Alabama from a hunting family? It doesn't surprise me at all. A family friend let his kids walk around with an AR-15 and Mini-14 in their early teens. I was left on my own with a .243 when I was around twelve or so because I had proven to be mature enough to handle it, and he was with a guide and two other hunters. That thing is freakin' HUGE. I can't imagine shooting it with a pistol. That borders on suicidal. It's a .50 caliber. If that cannot take it down I don't know what can. In comparison my old rifle is a .270. Granted rifles have more powder.Regardless, shooting that thing at ALL is suicidal. A tiny three foot tall boar scares the Bejezus out of me. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: hal on May 25, 2007, 06:01:34 PM Varies by state and region but if you can use rifles you can probally use pistols. I am in Ohio now and deer hunting is a shotgun with slug round only. i recently lived in Tennessee where gun season was any leagal gun including handguns. It just varies but the south (old Confederacy) is likely more liberal in this regard.
Edit: You can buy a rifled (slug only ) shotgun. Why is this not a rifle? Because the caliper is 12 gauge so it is a shotgun. Ya, go figure. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Chimpy on May 25, 2007, 06:22:50 PM Edit: You can buy a rifled (slug only ) shotgun. Why is this not a rifle? Because the caliper is 12 gauge so it is a shotgun. Ya, go figure. 'Shotgun' is a classification for the type of amunition casing used. I believe in all shotgun ammunition, the projectile is entirely enclosed inside of the shell casing (I am not totally up on the entire gamut of ammunition these days, but I am relatively certain of that detail). Just like how muskets made from the Civil War era on had rifled barrels, but they are considered muskets or muzzle-loaders by terminology. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Merusk on May 25, 2007, 08:50:05 PM You guys are allowed to hunt with handguns? Fuck, we're still allowed to hunt with Bow & Arrow if we want to. The theory seems to be, "you want to wound an animal and then have deal with it, it's your own funeral." Eight rounds from a 500H to down it. Pretty piss poor shooting. Well, I'd agree if it weren't a handgun. Short barrel and such I can't imagine he was in optimal range for something so damn big. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! My third thought was too bad the thing didn't charge the kid after the first shot and trample him a bit. Maybe not kill him, but make it so he couldn't use his arms again. All hunting should be done with punch daggers lashed to your forearms. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Fabricated on May 26, 2007, 11:43:54 PM That kid is an awful shot. Post by: Paelos on May 29, 2007, 08:46:16 AM My friends that hunt here in Georgia mostly are duck/deer people, but they have seen a few pigs wandering around before and bagged a couple. Typically, the meat is ok if you give it over to a meat processor and then cook it fully. They also used to only keep about 50 pounds of whatever they would find, and then donate the rest of the meat to various homeless shelters in the metroplex. I think all hunters should do the same if you can't eat it all.
People that don't eat their kill should be shot in my book. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Nebu on May 29, 2007, 02:40:12 PM I used to work my summers/falls as a guide in northern Minnesota/canada for hunters and fisherman. Here is a summary of what I learned.
1) Hunting with a gun is not a sport. Tracking is a sport. There is nothing difficult about killing an animal with a high powered rifle. Tracking and finding animals is the element that requires skill. Hunting with a bow is marginally skillful, depending on the tech of the equipment. 2) Hunters tend to take the genetically strong specimens preferentially. This is ultimately bad for the herd. Thinning the herd is important, but the way hunters do it isn't ideal. 3) Most hunters are too lazy to track wounded animals and should have their licenses revoked. FOREVER. I am not against gun ownership and hunting as a general principle. I just will never understand how anyone can get pleasure from taking the life of a beautiful creature. When I came to this realization in my youth, I stopped facilitating people (and stopped guiding). Tracking is a skill and I will always respect those that are able to do it well. People with a vast knowledge of nature always amaze me and I've always wanted to learn from them. /Rant off Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Nebu on May 29, 2007, 02:56:51 PM Meat tastes good. I understand that and that's a reason I'm not against hunting. It's the hoards of hunters that kill animals with no intent of ever eating them that make me insane. It's like they're so low on self esteem that they can only feel better by blowing up a rabbit or a doe. Don't worry... I'm not a PETA psycho or anything. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Jimbo on May 31, 2007, 02:02:54 PM Even with the abundance of hunters (they are letting bow hunters hunt in Indianapolis), we still have a bumper crop of deer. Hell I think swerved to miss a deer is going to out rank swerved to miss a tree that jumped out at me (no comment on how drunk they are), on accidents this year. Of course being that it is Indiana, having only a few really big cities (and mostly mid sized after that), a buttload of corn and soybeans, and no natural predators, the deer are going nuts.
Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Zonk on May 31, 2007, 02:03:41 PM (http://www.mmognation.com/wp-content/uploads/vreenak.jpg) Alabama monster hog a Photoshop fake? Quote So the Alabama big pig is most certainly a scam. Since they’ve ground up the “evidence” into sausage they’ve got no way providing verification of the actual size of the hog. Which is another thing that struck me–and many of the hunters who emailed and commented: if you had a world record pig wouldn’t you want some scientific verification of such? Since they registered their “monsterpig.com” domain name two days after the pig was purportedly shot, they obviously knew they were on to something and expecting enough media attention and interest to justify a website. So why destroy the evidence, which–if their claims are true–would have immediately validated their claims and rendered all criticism such as this moot? Simply stated, they’re selling the proverbial “pig in a poke”, albeit a real *big* “pig in a poke”. http://www.prophetsplace.com/blog/?p=410 Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Jimbo on June 02, 2007, 11:06:19 PM Sheesh, ya all need to get out of the computers cubicle's and go enjoy the outdoors, kill something, and cook it, and eat it. :-D
Of course now that it has come to light that the pig was actually a farm raised pig, that was sold to the guy who owns the hunting preserve, and was pretty tame...kinda sounds silly (I'm still not shooting a pig with a handgun and hoping it doesn't charge me...big pigs can kill you). My kid is 11 years old, he has 2 air rifles, a compound bow, a pocket knife, a fly fishing rod & reel, and a "zebco 33". He has expressed intrest in using my paintball gun, and was interested in the other guns and some what into hunting, but since he won't eat what he shoots, he doesn't get to go. When he will eat a squirrel, deer, rabbit, or quail, my dad and I will take him out and let him try. And as expensive as firearms shooting can get, I'm beginning to think paintball plinking or BB gun plinking is a lot more fun and a lot cheaper. I let him fish since we can throw the fish back since he won't eat them (he is getting the fly fishing down pretty good). Oh as to a hog that big, I'm kinda leery of eating that...most of the hogs we would take to market would be at the very biggest 500 lbs, 300 to 400 lbs hogs would produce very good meat. Heck some of the best pork I had was in the Philippines with the smaller hogs they grow there (damn good eating though). And just recently, I caught a blue gill that must have been 18 inches long and almost 3lbs! I was by myself at our pond, caught it on the fly rod using a white spider fly, and was a great fight. Of course I didn't have anyone with me, and didn't have my camera. Then a couple of days later I had just got a new catfish pole (zebco 808 combo), and had taken some slim jims with me, and was out hunting for a big catfish I had seen in the pond. I caught him, dang thing must have been 3 and half feet long and freaking heavy! Of course no damn camera again...but I did have a couple of people who saw me reel him in (awesome fight), land him, and then pick him up, and throw him back too. Both those big fish are back in the pond, and heck I go and feed them every day (I buy 50lbs of farm fish food and feed them a couple of cups a day in the evening), so the beer will be good and the fish will still be there to be caught another day. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Signe on June 03, 2007, 06:32:51 AM Those fish are just humouring you. Stop feeding them and they'll ignore you.

Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Jimbo on June 04, 2007, 02:20:21 PM Oh man...I forgot to say, but yes I did catch him on a piece of slim jim (I take them for catfish bait). I break off about a 1 inch piece of slim jim, hook it up threw that casing it has (the fish can't nibble it away like most catfish baits), and use it till it stops getting bites on it, then re-bait it. It is oily, meaty, and last a while, so great if you are fishing for bluegill or catfish (panfish are notorious bait stealers). So yeah I did snap into a slim jim when I caught that catfish :D
Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig! Post by: Lantyssa on June 04, 2007, 04:13:59 PM What a waste of a jerky-like processed meat. A really interesting idea though, and more pleasant to use than catfish dough.
I like using grass (glass) shrimp for perch. A minute of bait catching provides enough for an entire afternoon. Title: Re: This is one huge dead pig!
