Title: PS3 Firmware Thread
Post by: schild on May 23, 2007, 07:04:12 AM
Time to start a new thread for the best update ever.

PS3 Firmware 1.80

Quote
Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

PS1, PS2 and DVD to 1080p?

^_^

I don't get the 'Access your PS-3 from a PSP" thing.

What does that mean for practical purposes?  Does that mean I can store games and movies on my PS3 at home and then connect and DL them to my PSP?  Or is it something else?

THANKS!

Figured that out already.  And now to go and get Atelier Iris 3, but of course I don't really want to boot it up until after I get the fw update.  Sigh.

Odin Sphere?  The 30th.  I should have just taken a nap until June.

Just telling you what the people behind the counter told me.  I am going to walk out of that store with something today.  Perhaps someone's spinal column.

I think you need to slam their goddamn face into the glass.

May 23rd: Odin Sphere (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281700)
May 30th: Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=B281716A)
June 13th: Raw Danger (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281750)
June 27th: Grim Grimoire (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281739)
July 25th: Persona 3 (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281719)

The day they kill off the PS2 is the day the music dies, imo.

God.  Tomorrow cannot come soon enough.  One question though: won't this make DVD's with shitty transfers look even fuglier?

Is Persona 3 seriously coming here?

Shitty DVDs will still look shitty. Yes. No help there though.

Yes. Persona 3 was announced last E3. We are not getting the expansion, Fes, at this point.

I hate how everything in the damn systems say the 22nd for Odin Sphere, but it's Actually the 23 when we get it.

Fuck, just ship it early. Are they That worried about people breaking street on Odin Sphere? Bigger titles I could understand, but seriously.

Actually. Atlus games aren't streetdated. The release dates, for the past 10 years, have always been The Day It Ships From Warehouse.

Just adjust your goddamn brain one day. It's not like This is new.

What Schild said. EBStop has always done ship dates, not store dates. You're a silly man Strazos.

No, I know how it works. I just think it's fucking stupid. Especially when they tell us to print pages of games coming out soon for people to look at, and list the date it ships as the release date.

I don't fucking know, and you think I would. It's a consortium that creates open standards, such as UPnP, but I don't know what the hell sony is driving at there. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Don't get your hopes up for xvid and crap, it's clear sony playback is a finiky beast. I'm still praying for the linux angle to turn my PS3 into my XBMC replacement. This thing MIGHT play mp3s from samba shares, but don't count on it.

Find something good to complain about. Like the Wii's release schedule.

The mistake was getting into a conversation with them.  My confusion was undoubtedly due to some sort of unintentional who's on first routine I was having with the three people behind the counter, plus one of those games being moved from the 15th and my bad memory.  Two of the employees were actually sharp, the third guy was transfered in from EB.  They pretty much were at least mildly aware of every game I rattled off, and when I mentioned Etrian Odyssey as being HARD, the EB guy tried so very hard to say "Shin Megami Tensei", after which I proceeded to give them a completely wrong tip on Japanese pronunciation.  I also explained to the big one why I did not think it was bad that Sony was removing the Emotion Engine from the PS3.  So, they were definitely a cut above the normal EB droolers... I was just in a hurry to get to a 3pm meeting.  I am sure they talked about me all afternoon.

When did $69.99 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8192733&ref=39&loc=01&st=DVP-5982&type=product&id=1164157002483) become the top range for DVD players?

I don't know of a single $69.99 DVD player that outputs DVDs at 1080p through HDMi. At least not gracefully.

Of course, it's not like the PS3 has a big whopping faroudja chip inside.

Did you click my link? I don't know if it qualifies as "graceful" though, since I've never used it.

One of the saving graces of my 3.5 yr old Samsung Tantus DLP is it's great whopping Faroudja chip active on 3 input ports. I couldn't care less if my DVD/Console/Whatever scales, I turn all that off and let the TV do it.

I was delighted to find that my PS3 would now be able to connect to my PC and stream music... at least until I tried it and it did not work.  Close but no cigar, Sony.

The new scaling and smoothing makes Okami look niiiiiiiiiiice.  I can even spot a difference in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Yeg. You need to install something like Nero MediaHome.

It seems, with MediaHome, you can actually stream avi/mp4/divx as well. That's what the hubbub is.

Basically, Yeg, the PS3 needs to see DLNA spec software or some UPNP shit.

Well then it should not tease me by showing a tantalizing icon.  Thanks for the tip.

But my 360 already does that, so my motivation to work on it is rather low.  I could very well have a reason to make it work before Halloween.
