The Secret World takes place on an Earth in the 21st Century in which pretty much every ancient legend and modern-day conspiracy theory you've ever heard of (and probably a few you haven't) is true. According to the press release accompanying the announcement, "...there really is a world within ours, a secret world where magic exists, monsters roam and ancient forces are fighting for the dominance of earth. It is a world of legendary stories, ageless conflicts and powerful cabals." The released concept artwork shows off the skylines of New York, London and Shanghai along with preliminary sketches for monsters, demons, character studies and a few other locations from the game.

Marketing for The Secret World was launched a few days ago via an alternate-reality Web game that consisted of an image of a cryptic piece of paper, ostensibly from the "British Museum of the Occult" that was seeded on a number of Web sites and forums. The poem on the paper contained clues leading the player to a number of Web sites where concept art from the game could be found.

According to the press release, the game has been in development in one form or another for the last 10 years and is currently in a playable state. Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom, is quoted as saying "We believe there are millions of gamers out there who want to explore something beyond traditional fantasy and sci-fi games. The Secret World' is just that, a fantastic new setting that will fuel the imagination of online gamers and keep players busy for years." The Secret World has no release date yet.
