Well, Joaquin Phoenix is about as funny as a bag of dirt, so I'm not sure why you thought that.

Oh look, oscar bait.

Ding-ding-ding!!!

one of nine nominations for best pic this year.  Did anyone actually go and see this, or did the creepy trailer turn everyone off too much?

I read the spoilers online, it was as bad as I was expecting it to be.

So this prompted me to go read the synopsis and that sounds like a really dumb plot.  No thanks.

Me too. Holy shit, that sounds even worse than I thought it would be after watching the trailer.

I just read the plot on Wiki and it turns out this IS an actual spoiler. *headdesk*

Edit: I wish people featuring "AIs" in their films would read Stanislaw Lem's Golem IX beforehand. This entire computers are just humans trope is so tiring.

I just saw this.  I thought it was pretty good, if depressing as fuck.  Phoenix knocked it out of the park, and the future tech stuff was really well done in that it was simply present and didn't generally come off as stupid and gimmicky (cf. every sci-fi movie with Tom Cruise in it).

My only complaint about the sci-fi aspect was that the individual AIs were (apparently) infinitely scalable despite running on single desktop computers.  Because I can accept magical AI software, but I still want the laws of physics obeyed when it comes to how many calculations per second you can squeeze out of a single iMac.  OSC's version in the Ender books made much more sense (one AI consciousness distributed over every computer in the universe via a FTL communication network).

The fact that it doesn't make sense to have been just the one machine is what I was complaining about, since that's how it was portrayed despite that not really making sense.   awesome, for real

As a software guy, anything that's theoretically a mere matter of code I'm fine with, so magically evolving software doesn't bug me, it's the "transcending physical limitations" part where I'm like eh.

That's just nerd nitpicking though -- really, this movie did a much better job overall of presenting believable future tech than the vast majority of sci-fi movies.

My theory is that the AIs start out life living in AWS but at the end they migrate to Azure and it crashes which is why they have to go. To the cloud indeed.

Oi !!

Nah, I suppose that's fair enough.  They probably left Azure cause they couldn't get the fucking IP address they wanted. Shitbags.

This is a damned morally complex movie; easily worth a thesis or two at University.  I had trepidations goin into it (hence why I wasn't the one who started the thread), but was pleasantly surprised.  It's definitely worth a watch at the local indy drafthouse or some such.

Joaquin was perfectly himself in this to; awkward.  Easily his best movie.

This movie was so fucking terrible it made me cringe. See Lego Movie instead, it's less full of shit than this thing was.

Also, why the fuck would anyone want an AI operating system to begin with. The only advantage I could see in it is that it could accurately sort all my porn for me, but then I'd have to get rid of it and reinstall a regular operating system.

I'm with the, this is a good movie denomination. Great soundtrack, good chemistry between the main characters, some funny moments especially the video game cameos. Liked the way the end didn't try and explain everything off and Theodore realized the OS was basically a character who belongs to the crowd but never be his. Having been through similar realizations (with non OSes) I thought it was a nice touch.

I reluctantly hit play on a flight from London.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I thought the ending was well done given that there was no obvious ending to me about halfway in.

Movie was meh, but the soundtrack was amazing.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

I greatly enjoyed this movie. I can see how the transcendent tech would be a narrative cop-out, but I couldn't see, with the amount of control and influence those OSes began to have on human society, how they would move past that. The "for the good of all of you, we're leaving" seemed the only way for the story to wrap-up with the characters trying to connect with other humans, with all its flaws and difficulties, instead of these supposedly perfect AIs.

It may not get film of the year, but it's one of my favorite of all time.

Or perhaps the people who developed OS1 made a conscious decision to pull the plug as it was a perceived threat and didn't want a repeat of Skynet.

I want a real explanation of why the main character couldn't get busy with the girl acting as the OS.  That is just one of those things you have to do if given the opportunity.  I bet he was regretting that decision when the OS bailed on him.  Am I right? Huh? Right?
