MP3 Rippers- Help

So I bought an MP3 walkman this weekened. (man I love quitting smoking. so much disposable cash) and I want to find a ripping program that seems rare. I want one that puts the artist and album title in a folder name then fills in the songs from the immdb? and puts the songs in the folder. Preferably numbered so they will play in order. can anyone point me at a free ripper that does this or at least a cheap shareware one?

I believe the default settings on iTunes do exactly what you are asking for.

You can rip music using Windows media player (that comes with windows) then convert them to mp3 using winLAME.

And I'd stay away from Itunes. Yes I know Ipods force you to use them

Creative have a great CD ripping program on their ZEN Mp3 players actually

Thanks a lot guys. I tried everything but the creative one. media player 11 fucks with my set up for playing everything with windows media player classic ( I'm old school, what can I say) and wasn't as configurable as I wanted. I did stumble across one that fits all my needs and has a ton of extra features to figure out. it's called mediamonkey and I'm sticking with it for now I think.

I use FreeRip and have for almost 10 years.  It's never come across a CD that it can't rip, even the so-called copy-protected ones.  You can configure it how you want it to dump the files and it does it automatically.  I set mine up by \root\artist\year-albumname\artist-track-songtitle

hmm. Monkey is kind of slow at ripping though it tried to do 2 tracks at once. Maybe I'll give your suggestion a shot.

Windows media player always worked fine for ripping MP3s for me, fast and simple.

Again thanks for all the suggestions guys but I have to say, in this case M$ wins hands down for as  ripper and access to an accurate database. Maybe itunes is similar but I don't particularly want to use it cause it's always trying to sneak on my system bundled with other shit. Other than having to reload k-lite codec pack to fix a few problems media player 11 caused I have had little trouble with it, where other mentioned ones gave me problems like locking up my ancient dvd burning drive and crap so I guess I will just use Media Player 11. I guess they deserve to get it right on the 11th version.

Ok new update. WMP11 left my walkman in a complete mess this weekend with duplicate files all over the damn place, as dispite trying to force everyone to their wma "standard" they don't appear to bother to check other files for duplicate names that might perhaps end in mp3 instead. I tried the apple one and once you discover the cleverly hidden settings to make it use mp3's it appears to be the best of a poor lot, imo. The only good way to keep things reasonably organized on and mp3 player is by hand, it would appear so far, as various programs deal with compilation albums in incredibly messy ways. I have a 2 cd coltrane compilation that none of the programs have got right and my ennio marricone and vancouver early punk compilations are absolute disasters with the shmorgs and dishrags getting their own album entries dispite having come off the copilation. Call me anal if you want but I want the damn tracks to be identified with the albums they came off, not the albums they originally appeared on.

And Goreschach  as this is just general, I'll go with eat shit and die as a  reply to your intelligent comments on the state of mp3 management software. I'm actually rather flattered to be called 12, unlike obvious pimple faced teens like yourself.

Fuck him if he can't take a joke. I didn't use M$ in a derogatory fashion I even gave them props on their software in the same sentence. If you're talking about other posts with obvious typos, sometimes I just don't have the energy to go through each post with Firefox's questionable spell checker and debate it's word choice.  Could be the rsi acting up but I'm finding typing painful lately. Since I switched from the old 102 key ps/2 kb's I've used for years to these new g type from logitech my typing has gone in the toilet but since my supply of used ps/2 kb's dried up paying $140+ delivered to Canada for Unicomps has gone a bit out of my budget range despite the market upturn. Fixed incomes suck.

We live under capitalism. ALL companies have to put profit ahead of anything else, it's the nature of the system. No need to single one company out by putting a dollar sign in their name.

MP3 ripping and personal media players are indeed a pain in the arse, in many ways. I've also resorted to manually syncing mine. It was OK when I used an iPod and iTunes, kind of, but now I've upgraded to a Sony NWZ I've had to ditch iTunes since the Sony transfer software doesn't do album art when you use iTunes, so I'm using WMP11. Mostly OK, some annoyances, nothing major.

Must be a general and that area thing as the game sections have never seemed to have that reaction. Oh well. I'll go back to pretending the board is just the games section and avoid the problems I guess.

After my hard drive died, I downloaded the latest version of CDex, and damned if I can figure out how to get it to save track number, year, and genre in the file tags. Those fields show up in the UI when I rip the CD... they fail to make it into ripped files. I can't find any indication that others have this problem (and I can't find anything obvious in the settings panel), but I can reproduce it on my home and work machines.

Any ideas?

I'm using 1.70 beta 4 and don't have any problems.

Under General -> Directories and Files

Output -> Filename Format:  %1\%Y-%2\%7-%4
Playlist -> Filename Format:  %1\%Y-%2\%2.m3u

I've set the WAV and Recorded Tracks to my own directory of C:\Audio\CDex\

It works without problem for me.

If you have it in a directory with spaces in the name, do you use quotes?  Have you tried a directory without spaces?  Within file format I know mine works with or without spaces.  This is also on a machine running XP.

Ah, I should clarify. The names of the files are fine. The problem's with the tagging - the data you see when you load the files into Winamp / iTunes / what have you.

They all show in the files I ripped this morning.  The track number is showing as '1' instead of the '01' format I selected, but otherwise all that info is there.

Under Options -> Settings -> Encoders -> Tags do you have the ID3_V1 and ID3_V2.4 checked?  Are you using the LAME encoder?

Ah ha. On install, CDex 1.7 beta 4 defaults to tagging with ID3_V2.3, not V1 or 2.4. That's fixed it. Thanks!

You can get a plug-in for Winamp and avoid the fucking travesty that is iTunes.  It works great with my iPod 80Gig Classic.  It took a little bit of fiddling to get things setup in terms of sync lists and the like, but once that was done, I haven't had to worry about my library blowing up or the database shitting itself in some new and fascinating way.

iTunes has a feature that finds duplicate tracks in your library. If you don't find a better solution, you could install it just for that.
