I found myself trying to decide between equipent quite abit.
Hmm... better armor/attack rating or stats seems..
So I found this, from beta, not sure how acurate but at least its something

Strength:

Strength / 5 = Increases melee ability damage DPS by result.
Strength / 10 = Increases melee auto attack damage DPS by result.

Toughness:

   Toughness / 5 = Reduces damage by X DPS.

Wounds:

Wounds * 10 = Extra Health over default increase per level.

Initiative:

   (Level * 7.5 + 50) / Initiative * .1 * 100 = +% to be critically hit.
   Initiative / (Level * 7.5 + 50) * .075 * 100 = +% to evade.

Weapon Skill:

   Weapon skill / (Level * 7.5 + 50) * .075 * 100 = +% to parry.
   Weapon skill / (Level * 5 + 50) * .25 *100 = +% Armor penetration

Ballistic Skill:

Ballistic skill / 5 = Increases ranged ability damage DPS by result.
Ballistic skill / 10 = Increases ranged auto attack damage DPS by result.

Intelligence:

Intelligence / 5 = Increases ability damage DPS by result.

Willpower:

Willpower / 5 = Increases Healing Per Second.
   (Level * 7.5 + 50) / Willpower * .075 * 100 = +% Disrupt spells.

Armor:

   Armor / (Level * 44) * .4 * 100 = +% Damage Reduction

Resistances:

   Resistance Value / (level * 3.8) * .4 * 100 = % Resistance

Block:

   Block rating of shield / (level*7.5+50) * .2 * 100 = Block %

Toughness applies against every kind of incoming damage, right? That would seem to make it really important to stack for RVR.

Are there any algorithms that explain how toughness and armor stack?  Do armor wearing classes get an additive bonus with toughness or do they see diminishing returns to toughness relative to say cloth wearing classes?

I was going to say the same thing. I found it pleasing that all weapons only listed DPS...

Sorry...

5+ years of DAoC and years of ATitD ruined me.

Maybe I'll ask someone on the EvE forums!   awesome, for real

if tougness affects magic dmg then wouldn't that make magic resistance worthless?

If that's the case then it makes them both beneficial.  How they stack (additive vs multiplicative) if they do stack is the question.

I dunno, does toughness affecting physical damage make armor worthless? I suspect it is almost certainly good to have both.

Speak for yourself - what I hate is when MMOs obscure their mechanics so you can't make informed decisions, personally.

pretty sure i remember reading that toughness has diminishing returns or a soft cap.  Don't have anything to back that up, so take it with some grains of salt

That's true, but then everyone has to get the exact item combination to optimise their stats and that usually requires faction farming, raiding 20 hours a week, random drops, or mind-numbing craft skilling.  That's when burn-out occurs.  There's only so many times you can push the button for the pellet.

Blaming the number nerds for that is seriously barking up the wrong tree.

Until such time as MMOs implement a regional strike or subcomponent targeting system, they'll all be that way.

Just as a heads up when you do your mastery training the obvious, reasonable and intuitive belief that training to the bar which actually contains a skill unlocks it is wrong.  You don't get that skill, you still have to buy it with another point.
