Title: Free Yahoo Fantasy Hockey League
Post by: HaemishM on August 23, 2005, 02:55:39 PM
Finally, Yahoo has allowed signups to begin for their Fantasy Hockey Leagues. I have one set up for f13ers, with 12 spots right now, in a points only configuration. I'm open to changing this to either rotissiere or head-to-head if there is a leaning any particular way. I totally made up the points totals, so they are open to interpretation as well.

Go to Yahoo Sports Fantasy Hockey page (http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey) and get a team. Leauge name is Bat Country, ID# 18997, password is catass2victory. Make a team. I've set the thing for a live online draft, Sat., Oct. 1st at 5 p.m. EST (4 CST, 2 PST), but that can be changed if we decided on a different day quickly enough. Here are the relevant bits:

Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, G, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR, IR

Stat Categories: G, A, +/-, PIM, PPG, PPA, SHG, GWG, FW, W, L, GA, SV, SHO

Stat Modifiers: G (5), A (3), +/- (1), PIM (1), PPG (2), PPA (1), SHG (3), GWG (1), FW (1), W (5), L (3), GA (1), SV (.5), SHO (3)

Cowboy up!

I don't know who half the players in the league are any more, but I am game.

Wow, I have no clue who Eastern European #51 or Canadian #12 are!

I'm going to lose so bad it'll make football from last year look like a step-up.

EDIT: I'm in.

I have never played fantasy hockey before.  Nevertheless, I am sure the Roosters will pwnz0r all.

I am horrible when coming up with witty team names.

Finally, a fantasy league with a sport I know.

You shall fall before the might of "with themselves".

Game 1: Ice Monkies play with themselves and lose

Bwahaahahaha.

ha.

Ok, it was funny when we used that in highschool and they announced our game with the teachers over the PA as - "Today at lunch in intermural baseball, the teachers play with themselves."

I've forgotten who's left in the NHL at this point. Is Gordie gonna strap them on this decade?

I am drafting all Coyotes as an homage to 99.

You'll have to fight me for that. Current and former Coyotes players are the only ones I know.

I've made 2 changes to this league. I removed 1 defenseman from the roster, and changed the draft time.

Yes, I changed the draft time to 1 hour later. It's now Oct. 1st, that's this Saturday, at 5 p.m. CDT, which is 6 p.m. CDT, 4 p.m. MDT, and 3 p.m. PDT. If you can't make it, I'd suggest pre-ranking accordingly.

Holy shit! I had no idea it was coming so soon. I know exactly dick about fantasy hockey- are there any magazines or websites that might be useful? Also, not sure I will be able to make the draft- I am going to a hockey game Saturday night and may have to meet up with some folks early. Perhaps I can start my drinking at the draft...

Do I need to see about changing the time? I think Yahoo has a few more times available. The season starts Oct. 5th, though, so there isn't much time.

Still spots left (3 I think). Yes, you do have to so somethings once the league starts, like set your lineups. Though you can certainly set your lineup the first day and let it run, if someone gets injured, you'd need to come back and sub someone else in. Same thing if someone starts sucking. I check my fantasy leagues daily, about 10-15 minutes worth of stuff, but I like doing that. You could go once a week and still probably be ok if you have a decent team.

I just want to say that I've never participated in a fantasy sports league before. I'm just going to be picking players that I remember being good.

I am guessing that offensive defensmen will be more helpful than good defensmen?

Could be, but not necessarily. Some will give you decent goals/assists, but have horrible +/- ratings or no penalty minutes. In this type of league, you're going to be trying to balance all the statistical categories, not just the ones that give the most points.

I still have little to no idea what constitutes a good team. I was happy to recognize at least half of the guys I autodrafted, which probaby means I have the oldest team in the league

Best I can tell you is try to get at least one guy that can top his category, especially in stuff like +/-, PIM and FW, because those are traditionally categories not a lot of people look at. I think.

I'm playing it by ear myself.

So, is there a limit to the number of games I can get from each position or what?  I'm a noob to rotisserie style fantasy games.  Or should I make sure I have somebody in each position playing every night (that can't be right, can it?)

Yes.

EDIT: Apparently, I misspoke. There had been an 82 games played per position setting. I just bumped it up to the maximum, which is 100 games played per position. I'd remove it altogether if I could.

Well, between this league and another on I  joined, I am really getting back into hockey for the first time in several years. I even broke down and bought the Comcast Center Ice package. I figure it is a good way to try to follow 1 or 2 teams as often as I can. So far it is the Canucks (the closest I can come to a local team) and the Oilers for rooting interests, and the Flyers and Pens for good rookies to watch. I still hate the Flames and Les Habs. Fuckers.

I haven't been posting much, between being sick and my computer being shot. I changed the stat modifiers to give negatives for losses and goals allowed.

Also, my Minnesota Wild are playing good hockey, scoring without Gaborik even being in there. This is a good sign.

I am of the personal belief that the next time Minnesota and Florida Play - Lemaire and Martin will get too close to each other and form a singularity of dump and chase, five man back, crappy asstastic hockey - devouring both teams entirely.

Yes, they beat us. No, it wasn't Cloutier's fault. No, 6 goals does not mean that Lemaire promotes offensive, free flowing hockey.

Title: Re: Free Yahoo Fantasy Hockey League
Post by: HaemishM on October 14, 2005, 09:17:42 PM
Lemaire will NEVER promote free-flowing, open ice hockey. Especially not with that lineup. We are talking about a lot of retreads and cheap players.

But they do have some scoring skaters on the Wild. Dupuis and Bouchard are both smooth skating scoring machines. I believe if they and Gaborik were playing on different teams, they'd be 40 goal guys easy.

I had a long conversation last night with a GM that was very enlightening.  He asked me to keep his name anonymous and be careful to protect him.

GM: I`ve been talking to many of my fellow GMs and although it is early there is a trend we are all discussing.  Essentially the new NHL, combined with the year off, is going to make for some very tough decisions.  I would venture a guess to say that on each team there are a few guys, staples of the past, that have obviously lost it.

Eklund: What do you mean by that?

GM: On our team it is a solid locker room guy, but you can tell he is frustrated.  He can`t play at this pace for an entire season.

Eklund: Are you going to move him?

GM: No. He`s too much of a leader, but we`ll have to keep him out of some situations and some games.  There are two guys that I can see I will have to move, but I doubt I`ll get anything.

Eklund: How does the salary cap play into this?

GM: It is what makes this more complicated. There is alot of salary tied up in these guys.  We have two guys in the AHL that would make our team better right now.  If we bring them up, we need to make some  tough choices.  These new rules favor smaller faster players.

Eklund: Do you think we will see more or less trade movement as a result of this?

GM: More for sure.

Yeah, Linden sure doesn't do much for them these days. What is he on, the third or 4th line? That is too bad...I always liked him. I remember going to see him play the Thunderbirds in Seattle when he was in juniors...chatting with some folks as we waited to cross the street to arena, and found out that Linden had broken his hand the night before and wouldn't be playing. Bugger!

If you flip through the perspective wheel, you can see it being just about any GM talking about just about any aging vet. I saw it as Patrick talking about LeClair early on. Could even have been about Hull. Could have been Linden, yes, but it could have been so many people that speculating is pointless. What's for sure is that the lockout accomplished nothing but robbing many seasoned, celebrated veterans of their last year or two. The year, obviously, and whatever damage sitting around during the layoff caused them.

He's centering a fourth line with Ruutu (Esa Tikkanen with less skill) and Lee Goren (30 year old rookie type). That line did actually score the winner last night though. He is also still doing PK duty for us.

Yes, I changed the stat mods again. It's a process.

I halved the penalty minutes stat mod from 1 point to .5 points. I finally realized that yes, having PIM is a good thing, but having it count as much as a goal or an assist? Not so good.

Yep. I accidentally grabbed the EA version at Best Buy- when it rang up at $29.99, I bitched and we figured out that I was a fucktard and grabbed the wrong one.

If anyone has it- how the hell do I start fight? I have seen what look like fight challenges in the lower right of the screen, but can't figure out how to duke it up! I skimmed TFM, but didn't see it in there, and they don't mention it in the tutorials (which I thought were fantastic otherwise).

In other hockey news (in case Cevik ever reads this), Seattle beat Portland 3-1 on Saturday night. Great game with some awesome fights and some really good hockey.

Have I mentioned how glad I am that hockey is back?

I liked hockey before. I like it now also, for completely different reasons.

Now, watching games is a much more emotional experience, especially with all the lead changes and charging comebacks - God Damnit Flyers, hold a damn lead, PLEASE.

Now, even the losses can still be fun to watch, like the 6-8 loss to Carolina. Also, being at the games is a whole new experience - that extra 4 feet may not seem like much on TV, but it is HUGE in person. The abundance of scoring and powerplays just makes things all the more intense - the OT win over the Panthers was sooooo worth the $90 for lower level seats.

The constant special teams play is starting to wear on me a bit, but I am really enjoying the season so far. Hopefully the players will learn how to avoid hooking and interference calls a bit to give more flow to the game.

The penalties are calming down. Players are learning a bit, and refs are starting to interpret better. What we need now is a fast review of each penalty upstairs to catch diving. That'd be just perfect.

Oh, and by the way - I've watched every Penguins game this season. They looked like an ECHL team for the first eight or nine. The two games before tonight, they looked like a pretty good NHL team. Tonight, they looked like a very good NHL team.

I'm expecting them to get hotter and hotter.

Unless, of course, Lemieux and Palffy get hurt and teams start concentrating on Crosby and frustrating him into a cold streak. Then, I suppose the goaltending could go dead cold.

That, of course, won't happen. Because they're my favourite team.

Gotta say I am digging the trade I made for Havlat. Wednesday was the first game of his I got to see- 4 goals. Not bad!

Fucker.

Of course, it's not your fault Brodeur got his knee skinned the same goddamn day the trade went through. But I'm sure you planned it that way.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think Manny has seen the ice since I acquired him. Goddamned Dwayne Roloson.

They finally moved OLN to a non-shitty channel on my cable and the game looks SOOOOO much better. I don't know if this was a move across a lot of coverage areas, but I'd check on that if I were you guys. It went from barely coming in on channel 80, to a channel near ESPN with the same quality.

I have finally crawled my way out of the bottom spot. I feel like I have won.

And somehow I remain near the top, guess this makes up for my Fantasy Football performance.  Goes to show again that knowledge of the game does not equal winning.

Not always, but I know hockey well and I'm in first. We'll see how it sorts out.

I THOUGHT I knew a lot about the game, but I've made some dumbass moves. I gotta admit though, I do prefer the H2H play better than the running total. I find I don't check my team nearly enough right now.

Oh well, after the all-star break is when I make my move!

It took me a ton of moves, and dropping most of my drafted players in the process, but I have a decent team now.

And I dunno who is doing it....but whoever you are, stop sending me trades for Gagne; you're not getting him.

I met a bunch of the Phoenix Coyotes yesterday while my daughter was in the hospital getting her tonsils out. They gave her some toys and stuff. I didn't see any mullets. Cujo touched me.

Don't worry, Brodeur has been giving me fuckall for points anyway. And goddamn Nabokov is worse, and is on the "can't cut" list. Fuckers.

Wow have I fallen from grace, last time I looked at the page I was in 2nd place (had just fallen outta first).  Lack of need to check my f football page has led to me slacking off.  I'll have to correct that mistake.

Soo... congrats to Shockeye for actually winning this.

Methinks not many paid attention after they weren't required to check their football pool(s) on Yahoo.

Gotta say that I much prefered the head to head league. Head to head, you actually would have a chance to win a week or 2... seemed like if you got behind in this league, you were out pretty early.

The scoring system needs some serious tweaking as well. 3rd line centers who were good at faceoffs were MVPs. That is just so wrong!

The scoring system was my fault. I tweaked it a bit in the beginning, but yeah faceoffs were probably a bit high. I welcome input for next year.

This was my first foray into fantasy hockey, so I was clueless going in. Next year will be easier to get things evened out. It was fun, regardless, and I learned a lot  8-)

I think I did fairly well for my first try at a fantasy league - I sat in second for the vast majority of the season, which is pretty good for me.

I am in as well. Whoever sets it up- PLEASE adjust the scoring on the faceoffs. Third line centers who score 10 goals a year should not be in the top 10 in scoring for the league.

I pointed it out to Haemish last season about some of the scoring, though more tweaking would be nice....maybe .25 points for a faceoff win? I know how he feels about penalty minutes, but the way the game is now...I can't see a reason to give someone points for their PMs - now, the guys with high minutes are less likely to be "tough guys" but more likely to simply be lazy skaters and such.

Those are the two big point issues that I can think of.
