Title: 'Tis the season!
Post by: Cheddar on December 01, 2006, 01:44:52 PM
Figured this would be a good time to post a general Christmas themed thread.  Show off your holiday avatards, tell us what you want for Christmas, let us know if you have interesting plans, and lets have a general revelry for the next 25 days!  I'll start.

I am thinking about getting my daughters a Wi, TV, and new bikes for both of them.  Not exactly sure how I will get my greasy hands onto a Wi; I am sure I can work something out.  I am also going to spend a week with my friend; her and I plan to do a marathon run of Charmed season 5.  Little does she know that I will be getting her Season 6 (amongst other things) for her present on Christmas!

My main problem is figuring out what kind of jewelry to get her.  I have around $500 set aside for something nice, and was thinking of some sorta necklace.  Anyone have a suggestion for a place I can purchase one from (as in walk in place, I know shit about jewelry)?

'Tis the season for oily, gay avatars?

My avatar is pretty holiday-oriented, really.

Edit for actual helpfulness: my father-in-law gets all of his jewelry from Sam's Club.

Sam's club?  Do they have gold/diamond jewelry?  Hmmmm, time for some internet detecting!  I woulda never thought of getting jewelry from there.

edit.  Holy shit they do!  I thought Sams club was just a bulk buy discount kinda place.  I owe you a beer for educating me, Yegolev!

They've got lumps of it 'round the back.  It's actually pretty nice stuff, but I admit to not really looking that hard.  They do have diamonds, I am pretty sure.

Hmm, the choice between tasting the charcoal or the peat moss it was filtered through...

I can enjoy a nice plain single malt Glenfiddich, preferably with soda water and ice.  I would probably get glared at if I ever actually tried to order that at a pub in Scotland.

I also put ketchup on my fillet mignon.  Seriously.

Title: Re: 'Tis the season!
Post by: Signe on December 04, 2006, 03:16:20 PM
Christmas IS a big pain.  I remember that, at least, it used to look mostly pretty.  Now, wherever I go, I see huge inflatable Santa's and all these  weird looking globes with strange critters moving inside.  It's scary and ugly.  Everything is inflated, included prices.

Title: Re: 'Tis the season!
Post by: murdoc on December 04, 2006, 03:54:46 PM
On our block there's an inflatable christmas scene of a reindeer lowering Santa down a chimney, but my wife and I thought it just made it look like Santa was going down on the reindeer over and over and over.

Title: Re: 'Tis the season!
Post by: Merusk on December 04, 2006, 04:23:22 PM
Just so wrong.

Yeah, it can be a pain if you let it.  I simply don't let it.  It's not worth being frazzled and feeling all obliged to people I wouldn't give 2 shits about the rest of the year.  We take care of ourselves and do one family get together w/o all the rest of the crap. :)

I can agree on the inflatable tackiness, though.  We have a 9' tall inflatable toy soldier and I feel it's overblown, so I set it back off the front of the house so it's not so damned overwhelming.  I don't get the 10' snowglobes and 12' snowman-snowglobes and such.  They're worse than the little 3' plastic snowman you used to see in the 70's and 80's.

This is a good time of year to make your charitible donations,  and to check who you've forgotten to give to that you usually do.  It's budget time for alot of non-profits, and many of the them could benefit from an extra few dollars in donations.

I had forgotten my donation to Planned Parenthood,  for instance,  until last week...  though I don't think NPR is getting my money this year.

Hey, good point. I dropped off about a thousand bucks worth of clothes at the Sal Army about a month ago and my charity of choice is Hospice Care, because they totally fucking rock if you've got a dying elderly relative. Being able to spend your last days at home instead of a hospital is the way to go, if you've gotta.

Don't forget your local libraries, either. Any books in decent condition will be considered, unless it's a technical manual from the 50s or something. Even so, libraries can recycle the books for you. Just don't drop off musty stuff, mold can spread to the collection. Don't be a book terrorist!

Thanks to my prolonged exposure to the F13 boards, I've seen Winger Christmas art.  Therefore, I am desensitized to all defiling of the holiness of the season.

Still, that mostly naked drunk santa was a pretty close second.

My avatar illustrates the greatest extent of Christmas related crudeness that still remains oddly cute.

This year, I have had more than a little bit of trouble answering that age old question "so, what do you want for Christmas?".  This is partly due to the fact I'll be moving to the US in a few months, so most of your large-scale electronics items are out of the question.  But even more so, it is simply because there really isn't anything that I need or desire right now.  I guess I've just been a little more lucky than average.

So, I am getting a goat.   No, not a coat, nor even a boat.  An actual real, live goat that says "baaaaaahh" (or is it maaaaahh?).   The catch is that I don't actually receive the aforementioned goat personally.  My goat, whom I've decided to name Cheddar in honor of this thread, will be delivered to some lady in Malawi.  I don't know this lady, but I presume that she hasn't been as lucky as me and could use a goat.  Maybe she has kids who can pet the goat, or maybe they'll get a little bit of milk from it.  Maybe she'll meet a nice man who also has a goat, and they can make more goats. Thrown in with the goat are three days of, well, goat-handling lessons, as well as some much needed medical examinations and vaccinations for this lady I'll never meet.  I hope she treats Cheddar kindly, and gets much needed help in return.  I'll try to be understanding if times just get too rough, and she is forced to do the unthinkable.  Maybe I need to ask Santa for two goats.

I guess I was bored.  I'm not sure if I saw Napoleon Dynamite or just the trailer.  These days, it seems, the trailers are more than enough.  Unless it's a really wonderful film, I don't feel as if I've gained anything by watching the entire thing.  The good bits are usually in the trailer, anyway.

Must resist....

I can usually figure out what dumbass thing I've said that make you lot have to "resist" a reply but I'm stumped on this one.   :|

Good bits = sexual organs. Trailer = redneck house.

Heh, I thought you were referring to anal sex.  To each their own!

Sure thing.

Tell me the punchline while you reel me in. I have no idea why Yegolev laughed so much.

I successfully rolled my save on that one. My mind is a deep river of pun.

SNL's "good skit" quota (1) was filled this year by a christmas-inspired idea.

So, if I PM you my address, can you have some to me by Christmas?

That treat looks good but caramel is not dental-work-friendly. :(

Alton did some nice basic sugar cookies, now I've gotta find dry food coloring. I want to make some like WAP's avatard. For the office xmas party.

I'm also planning to use that SNL skit, though just faking it, not actually, you know, putting the junk in the box, eh? For the office xmas party. Hey, they gave me (and my partner in crime, the maintenance guy) a walmart bag for an xmas stocking.

Just got back from Macys; found everything I wanted to purchase and was surprised to save over 60%.  I fully expected to walk out $500 poorer!  My girlfriend should be pleasantly surprised.

Now I gotta get ready to take her out to dinner.  Nothing like a shorn scrotum to show how much you care!

See ya guys in a view days (metaphorically speaking).

Have a nice holiday, Cheese Guy, you and your girlfriend.  Hope the rest of 2006 is better and 2007 is awesome.  Hope the scrotum feels better, too.

There have been some insane deals this year. We saved an average of 55% on stuff we bought at Kohl's (I stocked up big time on Oxo stuff, silicone upgrades baby!) and got $10 store credit for every $50 we spent. Then we went back and got even better savings the next day and used the credit, getting more than twice what we would have gotten...for free! She calculated it to something like 80% off the total bill when we were all done, it was ridiculous.

My God. I was googling for something humorous to post about Christmas in summer, and was assaulted by the most awful embedded Christmas MIDI music on the entire Internets (http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/book/dec24.html). If you think it's bad when it starts, believe me, it gets worse.

Anyway, Merry Season to all.

Wow that is so very awesome. It's the horribly cross-mixing of Jingle Bells / Dueling Banjos / William Tell's Overture / Fourth of July / Bad Midi. That's gold, Jerry, GOLD!

Christmas movies watched so far:

Scrooged (still great)

Elf (first time I've seen it)

I'm just sitting around twiddling my thumbs now. Not sure what my family's cooking up. It's only 9:30 and I'm already hungry.

Merry Christmas

Last night I had to go to my Aunt's house and I didn't want to but I did anyway.  Today I have to go to my sister's house and I don't really want to but I will anyway.  It's been a very strange Xmas so far.  Last night after the "do", we stopped off to see my sister and found my cousin and her husband's websites/my space thingys.  My cousin was wearing her underwear and I think her husband likes the cock.  Boy, she's going to be really pissed off if it's true.  She's exactly like me except she's obviously not shy.  You know, the underwear and all.   :|  I don't know what is in store for me today, but I've decided not to make any sense at all... which is what I do when I want people to beg me to go home.

Oh... and HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!

But have you gotten tired of Vendetta: A Christmas Story (http://www.vendettachristmas.com/)?

I've been watching that at least once a year since the late 90s, when it first came out, and it always gives me a holiday-themed chuckle.

T-Bone steaks and lobster. Some nice buttered squash, and dirty rice. With leftovers to boot.

I feel sorry for the Scots and their Haggis(es?).

I forgot what it was like spending Christmas with a family.  I was <literally> forgotten.

I had to act like an asshole to keep my GF from looking silly (Oh I WANT to stand here, with no one else, eating).  Was very sureal, and unexpected.

I once again hate Christmas.  Dunno what to do about things.

MERRY FUCKING XMAS TO ALL!!!!!!!!

Seriously, her twin sisters baby had a blast.  That made my day.  So merry christmas to all.  Or some such shit.
