Right, but your complaint is then about teaching by rote rather than being made to show your working which is what everyone else is talking about. Teaching by rote is a terrible method regardless of any requirement to show how you got to the answer.

Everyone? That's bullshit. Only the professional knows. Every time a house is built are the engendering elements explained in full to the guy who builds the thing? Who then checks the proof?

What do you think an engineering drawing is?  It is all the workings needed to reproduce the result the engineer originally derived, including the source for all his/her numbers.  They are often called 'workings' even.

All the time.  Every time.  Anyone able to read the drawing is able to check the work.  in small projects no one may check it before it's built but you can guarantee that working is on record in case something goes wrong and the PE who signed off is legally responsible for it.  In big projects workings are usually reviewed several times before being put into production.

teaching by rote stuff...

I never, and I don't think anyone else did either, say that teaching by rote memorization of a rigid method was preferred.

All the special snowflakes need to learn to work with others.

I emphasize, I had to decline sentences in English until my face turned blue despise already reading whole books in English in my spare time.

The problem is, the teacher needs to know if a student is mathematically gifted or just too lazy to write everything but the result off his neighbour. In theory every teacher should know about the capabilites of every student and take that into accout. In pratice there are too many students per teacher, and even if there aren't. Give one kid a good grade because you know he did the calculations in his mind and you know the parents of that lazy fuck who just copied the results are standing in the directors office and whine until he gets full grades as well.

Yes, you are special little snowflakes, but so is everybody else. Standardized testing sucks, but it is sadly necessary for various reasons.

Yes, every time.  The building official checks it, but it's only a cursory review.

That's why you're a professional.  Every time you put your stamp on it you're saying "at the stake of my career, this is ok according to the standard level of care."  You show your work so you can cover your ass if a lawsuit comes and so everyone can follow the thought process.  That's why every building has a set of calculations that go with it and/or a guy who's willing to stick his entire livelihood on the line to state it will stand.  Every. One.  Yes, even houses that don't use an engineer or an architect.  The contractor is sticking his career on the line , though he is typically following a set of prescriptive sizing charts that some OTHER professional put together.
