Heh, I'm awaiting the day when the heads of the WBC get their emails yanked and we find out they are fucking 8 year olds on the side.

I mostly just feel sorry if he was unable to attend. Going to my good friends funeral some years ago was an importance piece of closure. It would have left a bigger wound to have not attended. Hopefully he can pay his respects shortly and achieve a similar effect.

Whatever he'd done someone would have given him flack on the internet. It's the internet, fuck 'em. And I like the fact that Shatner pretty much said as much, diplomatically. I chose to honor a commitment I made months ago to appear at a charitable fundraiser. A lot of money was raised. So here I am; tell me off. — William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) March 1, 2015

I saw somewhere that a later tweet said something along those lines, apoc. "If I'd canelled this charity event, you'd have had nothing to say then either, right? ;)" Or some such.
At least Shatner seems to get the "you can't win" reality of the internet.

Ironically, I suspect it would be a different part of the internet pummelling him for that.
But he's broadly correct.

My feelings are thus: the Red Cross is an utter shitpile for various reasons that belong in the politics thread. Whatever charity function he was doing was a "charity," not a charity. I doubt his presence would've been that missed anyways, and likely would've made a better showing had he telepresenced from Nimoy's funeral instead had he went. (to me that would have been the more endearing presentation)
Second, he could have flown privately after the redcross function. He likely just didn't want to spend the money, nor break his contract (which likely would have cost him some coin as well). Which is ironic given the circumstances.
Lastly, just because something is a non-profit occasion, does not mean it's suddenly immune to standard practices at the workplace... y'know, like attending funerals of close friends and families. And in this case, it's not like his presence would have caused any shift in the bottom-line. He's not missing a major corporate merger or a federal investigation; really.
/shrug Shoulda went.

People deal with things in their own ways, Ghambit. I think this is a shitty way to sit in judgement of another human being.

Not judging him. Just sayin' what I and many many others would've done in his place. The only general exception in this particular case is you're talking about a rich celebrity, and as we know, they behave much differently than the average citizen. Shatner said his reasoning; he didnt say "this is how I'm dealing with it." So I'm going simply on what he says, not how he may "feel." Realize again, he was not even a headliner at this thing. Just your typical bourgie palm beach event to massage your ego. Here's the expose on the event btw: http://www.local10.com/entertainment/shirley-maclaine-wayne-newton-william-shatner-headline-red-cross-ball/31553054Draw your conclusions. Whatevs. I'll keep mine. Many have said Shatner was a complete money-grubbing douche (recall he never truly got along with either Nimoy, Takei, and others); this has money-grubbing douche written all over it. For all we know, deep down he may only look at his "friends" as co-workers. Okay, so maybe I am judging him.

Really, really judging him.
You can't know how Shatner felt and it's not your business. That's between the two of them, and one of them is isn't going to be complaining. Whether it was the 'right' choice or not will be on Shatner and no one else.
For what it's worth, I didn't go to the funeral of my best friend. Does that make me a terrible person? I didn't even have the excuse of a prior 'charitable' commitment.

Me neither, but that does not stop a Trekkie mother from brainwashing her spawn by watching reruns of that show. Until I had seen them all. Even that wasn't enough to relate to it, but the movies... that is where they started to feel like my family.

You actually saw them? I was glued to any re-runs that would come on :) I did get to see the Saturday morning cartoons of it. And of course all the movies in the movie theater.

I've only seen a few of TOS episodes recently enough to remember them, but my mother says we watched a lot of them together when I was a baby, with me sitting in her lap while she studied flashcards for one of her undergrad courses.
