My brother in law has also been a vegematarian for over 20 years, although he eats fish for protein.

Head scratch

So he's not a vegetarian then?

Yes.  No.  He was.  Sorry.  He was a vegetarian but he became ill and the doctor said he had to add protein to his diet.  He chose to add only fish.  He still doesn't eat red meat or chicken or anything like that.  Or bacon.

Now "they" are saying oily fish (à la Salmon, Mackerel, etc.) are bad for your prostate.  No one wins.

You can discount pretty much everything the general media reports about this sort of stuff. The amount of misinformation that's propagated regarding food and health issues is staggering.

People like to think they can eat some magical food or avoid some evil food, and live forever. There's stuff you can do/eat to be more healthy, and then there's the mania of eating "perfectly".

My grandparents are 96, 95, 84, and 83. All are still alive and all have some things in common.

1 - They never smoked
2 - They never drank, or stopped drinking early in life
3 - They've always worked outdoors on lawn projects or gardens.
4 - They cooked their own meals for most of their lives.

What they actually ate is mostly irrelevent, other than the fact it wasn't premade.

This is generally true, however there is starting to be some suggestion that refined sugars and certain unsaturated fatty acids can greatly increase your risk for heart disease, primarily through perpetuation of inflammation in the blood vessels.  There is clearly something wrong with the modern american diet, and that is why people like Paelos' grandparents tend to live a long time-  they don't eat all this shit.

I believe edamame are a source of complete protein.  I like to use them in a three bean salad.

You'd have to eat rather a lot of them, it's better to vary your protein sources as a vegetarian since not everything has equal amounts of essential amino acids. IIRC brown rice is high in the ones that soybeans are lower in.

I like meat myself so I'm just going by what I remember from Good Eats, but I think pretty much any combination of rice and legumes will combine for a complete protein.  Soybeans are just one of the few that are complete in and of itself, though it's much better for you if you eat the beans (edamame) than if you eat it as tofu.

Actually most things have at least a little bit of all 9, the issue is just you'd have to eat like 15 cups of rice to get the right amount if you were trying to do just rice. Soybean stuff is better but you'd still have to eat a pretty excessive amount to cover your bases IIRC, and both are better than doing it with corn or something.

I have some of that stuff.  IIRC I bought it on Schild's recommendation.  It tastes like bacon the way that BBQ potato chips taste like BBQ.

It's sad because it's true.  Kids today don't know what trying to wait 30seconds for a half naked woman was like.

Made me think of this, the Fresgo Inn Mushroom Burger:

Its a crappy restaurant in BC with a couple locations. Primarily used as a hangout for pnp roleplayers lacking a basement, or a late night post concert munchie destination.
Pretty much everything on the menu overflows the plate. I don't eat there anymore.

Finally unpacking after moving into my house... getting into some boxes that have not been opened in decades and found this... Not exactly Mint Condition, but hey I have two of them

They aren't worth anything more than a couple of bucks, but the memory of walking to the drugstore with my brother and buying this is totally f'ing Awesome!!
