What modern games fall into this genre? I feel like I'm missing a few of these loot-shooters.
(As a service) Anthem Destiny 1&2 Division 1&2 Warframe
(Platform) Borderlands
For shame! How could you leave out schild's second favorite game of all-time and the granddaddy of the genre: Hellgate: London (Okay, technically it wasn't a pure shooter but I think it still counts...) Warframe's drop/progression systems are so weird that while it is a looter shooter I wouldn't include in the Diablo-like looter shooter category that I think most people think of when they hear that term. Fortnite PvE (Save the World) mode is a looter shooter. Some might argue the PvP Battle Royale mode is as well though I'm not so sure since you don't keep the loot after each match. Same applies to Apex Legends. Alienation is a looter shooter with Diablo-style loot but it's a twin-stick top-down shooter so I'm not sure it falls into the same category as the 1st/3rd-person games. Definitely glad I held off on Anthem. Reviews seem to be coming in between 50-75% even from the paid reviewers. I'm thinking EA sweeps this IP under the rug in less than a year, especially when Division 2 utterly crushes it in a month.
I see more of an overlap between Destiny 2 PvE players and Anthem players than between The Division 2 and Anthem but I guess we'll see soon.

As a non-multiplayer gamer on the sidelines, I watch some of the convention footage when it's that time of year. I remember the Anthem preview being cringily contrived and the gameplay looked like bland by-the-numbers lootshoot.
On the other hand, I happened to be bored one night and watched some streamers playing Apex and it looked pretty amazing.

Anthem vs. Apex Legends is proof positive that the suits at EA have no clue whatsoever how their business works and probably just coast on FIFA money

Hilariously, Apex Legends doesn't support older processors and gives you a POPCNT error if you try to run it.

Older processors = processors that don’t support SSEv4 so basically CPUs ten years or older because Intel supports SSEv4 and the POPCNT instruction since Nehalem (2008) and AMD since the K10 architecture (2007 - 2008)

https://investors.funcom.com/funcom-n-v-enters-into-exclusive-partnership-with-legendary-studios-for-games-in-the-dune-universe/Funcom has entered into an exclusive partnership with Legendary Studios to develop games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s DUNE, one of the world’s best known science fiction universes with multiple adaptations into movies, games and other media. This is a six year partnership to release at least three titles on the PC/Console platforms, with one of the games planned to be in the “Open World Multiplayer” genre that will enter into pre-production in Funcom’s Oslo studio during 2019. Entering into this partnership is in line with the company’s strategy of working with strong Intellectual Properties, allowing for two different vast and well known universes – CONAN and DUNE – to be available for the Company’s games. Now it just has to be Anarchy Online 2 with Dune lore and I'll be actually interested...

I'm trying to even picture what a Dune game would look like. There's the old RTS (which I never played) that is supposedly good. Or was at the time.
A Dune MMO could be... interesting? Depends on when it's set, I suppose. Also depends on the fee structure.

Dune II was the one that developed the RTS formula of resource gathering, base building and unit construction, etc., that was copied by most of the subsequent major RTS games (C&C, *Craft, etc.). Also, nerf Sonic Tanks (longest range in the game).

I sort of get the AO reskin. I think they're about 10+ years too late to the party on that one, but more power to them.
I meant the other two games.
An RTS makes sense.
And then what? An RPG? Action/Adventure? Another RTS?

I dig the style. And man, that is a dark god damned topic to use for a game.

Five seconds into the Division 2 open beta and I already like it way more than Anthem. Not a surprise, really. Basically, I am just telling you all that The Division 2 open beta is underway. Uplay required.

I'm less excited because its /not/ made by the DD guys. I mean DD is great so blatant rip off might be great but that's seemingly very on the nose? Did Division 2 do anything to make PvP a thing and/or make it not feel like you are just unloading entire clipS into human beings bc HP's and stuff? I could never get past that in the first one.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation. -William Gibson

TTK is down, including in PvP apparently (haven't tried it myself), and insta-heals have basically been removed. They've also made changes to make it more n00b-friendly like gear normalization which of course all the hardcore Dark Zone players from the original hate.
