Ha yea I was scrolling through those until I found that. A bridge, over water, that is carrying a boat on water, over water. Breaks my brain. Especially when I look at the map. I can't fathom while a half billion Euro water bridge makes more sense than just digging a trench from tle Elbe west to the Mittellandkanal.

Elevation I think. One is a river that has been running since forever so has eroded down a fair amount while the others are recent-ish canals at a different grade.   I've seen weird boat elevators somewhere in England that accomplishes the same thing.

How can you tell Ab has spent most of his life away from waterways?  Yeah, he meant canal locks.

No idea either, but I used my secret superpower of speaking German and looked it up for you: The previously used path shown in your graphic was a 12km detour, it's main drawback having been the different water depths. The Mittellandkanal allows ships with up to 2m draft. The Elbe only 1.30 to 1.50m, depending on water-level. Ships with more draught had to stop in the Magdeburg habour to unload some of the cargo to a second vessel, cross the Elbe and there take back on the cargo load. The water-bridge avoids that issue.

No, he was right. They are actually called that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weird_boat_elevator

That's awesome. Funny too that I thought this was stranger than the Felkirk Wheel. Think that came up previously in this thread at some point and all I thought was "interesting".

For some wierd probably mnemetic reason or something, boats mess with my brain, particularly huge ones. I look at a gigantic ass freighter floating and my brain can't wrap around it. I know intellectually how it works, it just looks wrong. Planes though? no problem. Go fast, have lift, etc.

Was actually thinking of that exact Falkirk Wheel posted right after my post.   I'm familiar with locks.

I get to watch a barge pass 50 feet from my porch every other day or so.  It's really kind of cool and has yet to get old.

I would have bought it already just for that, but then I noticed how obnoxiously huge that watch is.

I think the photo has some weird perspective stuff going on. The screen is 40mm across which makes it large but not enormohuge.

No, 44mm is 1 and 3/4 inches. It's bigger than a 6th gen iPod Nano. It may not quite be enormohuge, but it's just a hair shy of strapping half of an original iPhone on your wrist. Come to think of it, if it's going to be that big anyway, an iPhone sized rectangle would be a lot more useful form factor than the circle.

It is pretty cool looking, but you might as well tattoo "Nerd" across your forehead.

40mm is actually about average for a men's watch these days.

I'm a boring person; I prefer smaller watches with simpler lines than the giant hi-tech monstrosities most places try to sell me.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Big watches are the "in" thing and 40-45mm is the average width. Somewhere around 13mm thick and bands about 20mm. Check out Fossil and Invictia's website, they're all about that size, dwarfing my old 1960's-1990's 33mm (1 3/8") face watches

That's because the only reason to wear a watch is to make a statement, and if it isn't ginourmous, it isn't much of a statement.  That's why bugfuck crazy expensive mechanicals that could be swapped straight across for a new car are so popular with the Wall Street set.

Of course they are are fashion statement, but so are shoes and any other article of clothing. But a quick glance on the watch is still a serious upgrade over having to get out your smartphone every time you want to know what time it is.

I haven't worn a watch for 20 years. The world is full of clocks and things that display the time constantly. On the very, very rare occasion that I need to know the time more accurately than +/-15 mins then it's literally zero effort to pull out my phone.

Shoes, however, are really difficult to go without.

The only way that I would ever wear a watch again would be if it could be implanted under my thumbnail and shine the time through in an eerie cyborg manner, I don't care how cool the deathstar watch is.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Feh. The only man jewelry I've worn is my wedding ring. If I'm going to adorn myself, it's going to be with full augmented reality goggles. That is the statement I want to make.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

A classically designed watch is a key piece of men's fashion accessory. Also shoes, good cufflinks, a pocket square, and various ties.

Getting my phone out to check the time or quickly look at text messages/emails is the one reason I actually quite want to get a smart watch. I haven't seen any of the current gen ones that I would want but I can definitely see myself getting one just to be able to quickly see if an email or text that's come through is from someone I want to look at or not without getting out my phone.

Totally lazy but that's what technology is for.

This isn't the case where I am and I only noticed once when I had an appointment and had forgot my phone.  Lots of places simply don't have wall clocks anymore.

I started wearing my watch again, just in case.
