Title: Nintendo Revolution -> Wii
Post by: Trippy on April 27, 2006, 09:35:43 AM
Nintendo announced the official name of their upcoming console and it's called "Wii", pronounced "we", as in "Wheeee! WTF!?"

http://revolution.nintendo.com/  (Flash page)

Quote
Introducing...Wii.
As in "we."
While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their gams...and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because it's really not about you or me.
It's about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

Edit: Apparently it's not "Nintendo Wii" but just "Wii" as in, "I'd like to buy a Wii please", or "Do you have anymore Wiis?"

I think I've been to that website.  It was disgusting.

Durrrrrrr...I keep forgetting we actually have an industry news subforum now. I may have posted it like 2 minutes before you did, but you actually posted it in the right forum, so yours stays, mine goes.

Also, what a terrible name.

I want some of what they are smoking. That has to be one of the worst brand names EVAR.

I think I'll continue to call it the Revolution.

Apparently using the double "i" is the new hip way of naming things, a la the Intel "Viiv" technology.

I'll keep calling it the Rev, not ゐ.  Or ゐい.  Whatever.  Gimme my Zelda.

What a confusing, uncompelling name for a product.

We had a product called "WEI" (pronounced "whee") for a while, "WEI" being "Windows Explorer Integration".  It was eventually changed to "EXP" for "Explorer Plugin".  I liked "WEI" better.   :-P

From the Game Informer: Nintendo PR person attempts to explain the reasoning behind the name (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200604/N06.0427.1154.38678.htm)

Nintendo Go was better and it still was horrible. GameCube 2 would be best.  Nintendo should learn from Sega's naming blunders.

For a long time there we’ve been discussing the name and there was a lot of talk, and this is what the committee came up with. It was a large group of people that came up with the name.

Explains a lot that does.

Yep, design by committee will always be horribly obtuse, unrefined and at best, bland.

And Wii, the word, is W-i-i, and the two I’s represent both people and the controllers.  So, it’s really not about this sort of tongue in cheek.

So should it really be called WHY?

That name is fucking clownshoes.  I hope they decide to keep it as the Revolution when it hits the states.

I thought they had a good brand with "Prime", they should stick with that.

It is totally retarded, but then again I'm no longer Nintendo's target audience. Gaming for the masses, no thanks, I'll take my niches.

Edit: Oh, and it's official, Nintendo thinks it's the new Apple.

The PR guy does have a point.  Those other names are all really stupid, too.

The whole purpose of the name is to get people talking about it.  It doesn't matter if the average person doesn't know what the hell Wii is, or how to say it.  As long as they're like, "holy crap I want that."  Even if they aren't, it's distinctiveness leaves an impression in people's minds.  That's good for enticing the mainstream gamer, and making sure Mom and Dad have an idea of what to get Timmy.  I just had an exam, if the foregoing is idiotic please forgive.  I have to go now.

I actually agree with you.  Wii-todd-did name or not (nyuk nyuk), it won't be stopping me from getting some Wii on release day.  When does Nintendo release their Wii, anyway?  I hope it's soon.

I read somewhere that the "we" sound is hard for the Japanese to pronounce. Dunno if that's true or not but if so, WTG there Nintendo.

Erm...Japanese has both Ws and "ee" sounds, so I don't see a problem.

If they can get Miyamoto to say "Wii" at E3 without someone laughing they'll be fine.

They would have to keep me from laughing. If I was around Shigsy and he said "Wii" whoever was in front of me would get hit with a face (or back of the head) full of vodka.

You might be thinking of "tee", but if so it's really that they don't have a syllable for it.  There is a hiragana for "wee", though, which is what I posted in my initial unproductive comment.  The pair afterward is "wee" with an extra "ee" after it... just in case we are supposed to pronounce it.

Schild, there will be cash money for you if you say to Miyamoto: "Can I see your Wii?"  It must be recorded.

Nix, what's up with the fucking cats?

I kind of like calling it the Wii-Wii.
