Of course, then a stiff breeze would pick up and send you to a tumble... and from that height, I'd think you would have plenty of time to think about how dumb it was to do that in the first place.

My guess is that it was originally put there as decoration, rather than as any type of real hold. The place has a park-like quality.

I went to see Pena Palace in Sintra years ago and that was great. I had no idea about Pena's Pond at the time - wish I did. And yeah, totally a folly. It [the Palace] is real 19th century Romantic stuff a bit like Castell Coch near Cardiff - built in the late 19th century by the Marquess of Bute as a weekend getaway place for his family.
