No, it's all a  single piece of thread layered with multiple weavings.

I'm curious how they work.  If they get a print-out pattern for the nail sets or if they sketch then nail.

It may well be a single thread and its by NO means easy(easier than it looks and it already looks damn hard) but it's not as random as it seems. If you look at the close-up you'll see that outlines were done and then filled in, much like a normal sketch.  The impression is that all the stringed ranombly criss-cross to form an image but the image is a lot more intentional than that.
