My insane science teacher in middle school used to buy a sizeable brick of sodium once a year, line up all the kids at the back of the room, get a big metal tub of water, drop the sodium in with tongs and run to the back of the room. Then he'd have all the kids stand on a pair of small towels, two for each of us, and mop up the sodium hydroxide by 'skating' around the mess near the tub. (We put on rubber gloves to pick up the towels and deposit them into a receptacle).

The ceiling tiles of his classroom above where he would do the demo had been entirely pitted away.

After about seven years of this, the local fire marshal got wind of it and descended on the school like the wrath of God.

Which is why kids no longer learn anything in schools. Sometimes, you gotta do some strange shit in order to make it memorable.  why so serious?

My lab partner and I were famous for lighting things on fire. Usually not intentional.

If not for music, I would've ended up in science. I was really into the field and even after derailing into music still took every science offering in school and majored in biochem during my first attempt at college (I was drawn to the chaos biology introduces into what was my strong suit, chemistry). Actually my for reals secret ambition was to recreate The Whisperer in Darkness machines for "manned" deep space travel.

My chemistry teacher in high school did one really cool experiment. We stilled some moonshine and he let anyone who wanted to have a taste. It wasn't enough to give a real buzz but it was pretty cool. Especially cool was when I took the same shot that a big burly football playing dude got and his teared up while I just took it without the reaction. Made me feel manly.

That sun picture is awesome. Was it taken from the ground, or a satellite?

Also, Danny Trejo is awesome

Satellite, the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

The Hannover airport picture is superb! If you tried that in the UK they'd shoot you for being a suspected muslim terrorist.

I call shenanigans.

There is a Southwest plane in that picture. Southwest doesn't fly international routes.

Damn.. now I need a high res version.

Ed: Chimpy - It is a confirmed fake as far as multiple-exposure goes.  Still nifty.

Highest resolution one google could find is here:  http://i.imgur.com/XEmCJ.jpg

Highest rez on Tineye was only 1024x768.

Appears like a shop to me.
Edit: Yeah very confirmed, also was suspicious of being new to me to, and it appears it was a New York Magazine cover from 2007 (via tineye).

Also, obligatory awesome picture thread addition. May or may not be a BW, but at least I'm not just typing something in a thread for images.

Honestly, these days, I don't really care if it's shopped. It's still a great image. It'd be more awesome if it was just multiple exposure - although even that would require extensive image manipulation or else the scene would be grossly overexposed.

Edit: talking about the airport picture :)

That is freaking awesome.  I would get a tattoo in all black mirroring it on the other arm.

Getting hit by lightning is no fun. But it would have been much better if I'd gotten a scar like that.

It really isn't.  I've got some electrical burns on my hands, comes with the territory.  People are sometimes impressed, but eh.

Wait, are you saying you were hit by lightning?  You can't just drop that tidbit without more.
