Great movie.  One of the better war movies I've seen.  Of course it isn't really a war movie, but if you haven't seen it you really, really should.  Actually, I think I would rank it in my top 5 (excepting Lord of the Rings and Star Wars).

This movie tricked me. I was expecting far more of the fantastical and far less of the dramatic small-cast wartime movie.

At least I got it on sale and it is quite pretty in high-def.

I too felt tricked by this movie.  I ended up liking it, but I feel really sorry for all the kids and their parents that got tricked the same way I did.  Years of therapy.   :uhrr:

Guys you'd slate people in this forum for not knowing anything about a game developers history and then complaining when said developers made a game true to their form. This is no different.

Every single one of Guillermo Del Toro's films, except Hellboy, has been about the Spanish civil war and the effects of it on the Spanish people. Why would you expect this to be any different?

Anyway, one of my favourite films, must get round to getting an HD copy.

Ya, this movie was excellent. I'm not even sure who turned me on to it, but I saw it a few months ago and absolutely loved it.

I seriously :heart: ed this movie. I really enjoy movies that trick me. So much so that I've started not watching trailers so that I know less about a movie before I watch it. Films are so much better when you have no preconceived notions about them when you watch for the first time.

As I undertand it, the only reason there was less of the fantastical than intended was budget - fucking money. GdT apparently wanted to put a dragon in it, but the cost was too great. Tight fucking studios.

At least he'll get his dragon when he does Smaug and that's having a fuck load more dosh thrown at it than PL.

Yes, I was disappointed. In fact, I felt ripped off as I didn't see it in theaters and did not pass go, but rather went straight to Blu-Ray. It's the only Blu-Ray I bought for more than $20 and it was not worth it.

It had a pretty good bad guy - if you can appreciate that sort of thing.

Sorry - being a pedant: only two of his films have been about the Spanish Civil War and that's this one and The Devil's Backbone. None of his others have been.

Ah you are right, my mistake. I'd forgotten Cronos and didn't realise he directed Blade II.

I still think slating a film because you didn't find out enough about it before buying it is silly. Blurays are expensive! I don't buy them unless I know they're gonna be worth it!

I can think of only a handful of films that I want to watch repeatedly enough that owning them is warranted. Now that we're gonna have a kid, that might change (we've stocked up on Miyazaki just in case).

This was on IFC or one of the other HD movie channels last night. I started watching on a whim and got to bed way too late. Great movie.

I think this movie and City of Lost Children are two of the best not-really-for-kids kids' movies out there.

I like this film a lot but there is no way in hell I would ever even think of it as a kid's film, just because there's a kid in it. A young teenager, especially a girl, might find it very interesting and compelling, but not a younger kid. City of Lost Children, on the other hand, I might show to a kid 8 or older, if the kid was fairly mature.

I didn't really consider it a kid's film. Except the part where the Capitan bashed the peasant's face in with a bottle, kids should see stuff like that to keep 'em in line.

I said they're "not-really-for-kids" kids' films.  Grave of the Fireflies is another that comes to mind.

I saw a preview for this before some Indy flick me and the gf saw and I was hooked. I put it on my must see list which basically means this would be 1 of 3 movies I would pay to drive over to the cinema to see that year. The gf was not all that impressed and was mainly put off by the subtitles. I however thought it was a brilliant take.

You need a new girlfriend.

Hopefully she's very good-looking to compensate.

I buy movies I haven't seen all the time, usually based on a criteria of who was the director, actors, what trusted sources have said about the movie, and so forth.  Rarely has it come back to bite me in the ass, so I will continue to do it.  Sometimes you just need to see a new movie, dammit, and all that the theatres are showing is dogshit.

Didn't like it much.

And given how expensive it is to see movies at the theater these days ($10 around here), if you watch it more than once, or watch it with friends or family, buying the DVD ends up being cheaper, and you can keep the DVD or give it to somebody else or sell it on ebay or whatever afterwards.

That said, I enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth... it was totally not what I expected, but quite enjoyable nonetheless.
