Awesome :)  Try it with flash too, long shutter speeds (and messing about with rear-curtain or front-curtain sync if you wanna get nerdy) and zooming/moving lens with flash can be very cool :)

I will one day somehow manage to justify a 400 dollar flash, because it would be awesome to actually do things with proper lighting instead of playing with slow shutter speeds and getting pretty damn good at holding my breath and steadying the camera.

My wife and I attended Obama's rally in St. Louis today.  Media reports indicated that 100,000 were in attendance, more than any other U.S. Obama rally yet, including Obama's acceptance speech in Denver.  Despite the huge crowd, my wife and I got some great spots around 75 feet from the stage.  It was a wonderful experience, and we got some great pictures to boot.  Here are two that stood out.

I tend towards cynicism when it comes to American politics, but my sense of hope for this country was renewed today, and I hope these pictures can do something like that for you too.

Here's the view behind us towards the 100,000 strong crowd:

Here's the view towards the stage.  You can see Obama in the white shirt with his back towards the camera as he strides across the stage:

Edit:
And here's a picture of a flyer they were handing out pre-rally that I found pretty humorous:

I visited a ram breeding competition in western Iceland this weekend. Here's some grown men riding sheep.

Why would you have done this, Yoru?  You go to an interesting country with some of the most awesome geography I've ever seen and you find what sounds like the most incredibly boring thing to do.

You're still my favourite man in a hat, though.

I went to Snæfellsjökull as well, but landscapes of glaciers and waterfalls and snow-capped crags are not on the same comedic level as farmers riding sheep. But here's a glacier, just for you.

It's both a word and a proper name! Snæfellsjökull = Snowy-Mountain Glacier. Icelandic place-names get... verbose.

Here's a shot where I'm exiting from a fissure in a cliff at the foot of the glacier, looking east. The name of the fissure started with an "A" and was something like twenty letters long.

The pics are lovely.  Everyone should go to Iceland just to see glaciers and steam shooting up from the ground.  Just try not to stare at people's cheek bones or get close enough to smell their cod-breath.  I love cod but, you know, give it a rest!

The wife and I had a layover in Iceland on the way to Paris last year.  We both ended up _really_ regretting that we didn't finagle a day or two in Reykjavik.   France was awesome, but the terrain of Iceland as we flew in was breathtaking.

I had my honeymoon in Iceland, amazing place. Although next time I go it will NOT be in March. My toes are still numb and it was 9 years ago.

Photos without flash, rare for me  awesome, for real
Miserable, grey day though so f2.8, ISO400 and lots of +saturation :p  Also, top one, handheld at 1/10s... this VR stuff seems to work!

Nobody ever admits to +saturation in Photoshop on the Internet!  It undermines the LOOK HOW AWESOME MY CAMERA'S SENSOR holy wars that hardware nerds like to pursue.   And yah, VR is good stuff.

Hehe yeah, it's stupid isn't it. Especially when default settings on a lot of cameras have huge saturation boosts anyway, especially some of the point'n'shoots - saw someone using one the other week that had a lens out of a christmas cracker on it and noise like a snowstorm but because it had such high vivid settings it made pictures that looked like some kind of surreal, day-glo acid trip of an advert. She thought it was awesome though, so fair do's :p

I have plenty of arguments about image manipulation with other photographers, there's so many "purists" who think that photoshop is evil. Oddly enough they mostly seem to come from art backgrounds of some type. Strange. Wonder if it's something to do with the whole is-photography-art thing and they think that the more human input there is into creating the final image the more it leans towards art instead of craft.

I tend to get that from "old school" film photographers, who seem to think that if your postwork doesn't take 6 hours in a darkroom, with no option to undo if you fuckup - then it's not le art.

Photography has had a long-running argument between the "no manipulation" crowd and the "final image is everything" camp. Dates back to the Ansel Adams days and before, with some saying that dodging and burning an image to enhance imperfect exposures is wrong all the way to those who composite images from multiple negatives (which lead to some of the Photoshop arguments).

I tend to believe the "no manipulation" crowd is full of horseshit.

Art is in the eye of the viewer.  Some like processed images, some like raw.  Personally, I support it all.  Variety is what life should be about.
