Real men carry flares and smoke grenades, not froooo-froooo phones.
It survived a 2.5 mile drop. That's not frooo-frooo. (And yes, I know about terminal velocity etc, 2.5 miles still sounds impressive).

The phone might have, but that glass didn't and really... when your whole interface is based on a touch screen, the glass is as important as the stuff underneath it. But yes... it is sorta impressive.

James Doohan was a combat veteran who lost a finger on D-Day. So yeah he could wear the skin of aborted babies and I would still show him respect.

Just to be clear, Jimmy Doohan was born in Vancouver, BC. So yes, he actually got shot by his own men.

Of all the shuttle pictures I have seen since the first one went up when I was 8 years old, this is the first time I have ever seen this type of shot... Re-entry heat signature seems abrupt from that picture along with my ignorance of this type of stuff.

Cue the clever analogy comparing Christopher Reeves and our space program.

In order to maintain its orbit about 200 miles up, the ISS has to travel at 11,000mph... three miles per second. A shuttle which has docked at some point is still traveling about that fast. Rather than wasting a lot of fuel braking, the shuttle does most of its speed reduction by hitting the stratosphere, the yellow portion of the atmosphere visible in the image. It doesn't get thick enough to make the shuttle's tiles glow until it's about 60 miles high. By the time it hits the troposphere (the thick blue breathable portion of the atmosphere under the yellow part) it's slow enough that it no longer glows. The tropopause is the name of the space between them, about 7 miles up where intercontinental airplanes fly. Based on how blurry the image is, I imagine it's several minutes of exposure on a nearly dark Earth, and 150 miles of parallax keeps things relatively still. You can see a few pink spots of sunrise near the edge of the image, and the shuttle landed at 5am. I'm guessing the exposure ends at the hottest portion of the descent, about 40 miles altitude, while it's roughly over the Gulf of California on its way to Florida.

The page I shamelessly ripped it from did indeed claim it was from Sea World Florida in the 70s.

There is a joke to be made about Aquaman.
I can't think of it but I know it exists!

Peter David made some significant changes to the character of Aquaman in the 90s including the hook and bread.
