It's probably to force a dramatic pause into your reading of it!

I'd love to hear the story on that.

If the cuttlefish or squid is freshly dead, it still has lots of ATP in its cells.  The salt in the soy sauce will stimulate muscular contraction/spasm yielding the dancing squid effect.

I use this example in my biochem class.

I think "wildfire" is probably giving the wrong idea--that's picking up small fires used to clear brush and maybe even open emissions of flame from industrial facilities.. I don't remember a massive wildfire along the Mississippi stretching from Lake Ponchartrain to southeast Missouri in July for example.

Yeah, unless there's some chemical analysis there it's a heat map of all sources "X" temperature and possibly "Y" size or duration and not much more than that.

colours are a little off too , shows the Top End, (aka middle top part of Oz) aflame in Feb/Mar..That aint happening since it's sitting under a couple of meters of water at that time. July/August is when its aflame (in the aptly named Dry season)

There aren't many wildfires in Georgia either. Way too much rain this year for that. Like record setting. It's been awesome.

It's not long ago we were in a horrible drought, so I'll take this instead. Plus lower temps.

I must be reading the map wrong. I just see the dots as when a fire occurred at some point in that month that was reported, whether it was an hour long or a week.

Can't be based on a report to authorities, if that's what you mean. Much of the area of sub-Saharan Africa that's got so much activity has virtually no governmental bodies to make a report to and none that would keep a record of such a report.

I don't know of any recent wildfires near me and there seem to be quite a few in my area of Indiana.

Guys, direct your complaints at NASA, instead of shooting the poor messenger.  cry

Here is some background information:

Quote
It’s important to note what this map is showing before you draw any conclusions, however. Each spot on the map represents a fire signature caught by a thermal sensor on NOAA’s GOES satellites. Every time a fire is detected, a new spot is added — this means when two different satellites see the same fire, two tiny dots are added. When the same satellite sees the same fire again, another dot. So far this year, fires have been spotted 323,828 times, but there have been just over 31,000 fires.

So, while it looks like the Southeast has taken a relatively big hit, what you are looking at is related to the number of fires, not the acreage burned. The southern quarter of the country has only seen around 117,000 acres burn so far, as opposed to 2 or 3 million in some years.

I would have included the information, but the website I got it from (german speaking newspaper) didn't mention it. This is from a wired article that seems to be the original source.

Calapine explained it via NASA. Also, think of all the slash n' burn.

Slash and burn is what all that is across Equatorial Africa, no doubt about it--but seeing the explanation that Calapine provided, that's a lot of teeny-weeny fires set by village farmers being seen and recorded multiple times. It's not the kind of huge organized burning that's been a big issue in Indonesia, for example. Cool map though.
