An air-rifle pellet hitting a soap bubble?
Digg said it was a water bubble, which seems kind of surprising considering there are two  (three?) bubbles within.
Yes. A water bubble with soap maintaining a stable surface thickness by way of the Marangoni effect. As opposed to a milK, beer, sea water, or any number of other liquids that display similar surface tension structures.

A restaurant we went to in Tokyo (Honjin, in Ginza) had that setup for their sake.

I'd go with an intricate metal door that made it look like the entrance to a vault from Fallout or something.

Or a big metal door with this spraypainted on it:

The mounting of that door was done very poorly. The hinges (which are flush mount) are sticking up at least 1/8" and the edge of the frame also has several places where it is well above the floor.

Yes.
Michigan is not Canada. Though they may have to sell the UP to the Canadians in order to pay the bills soon.

Maybe this is the solution to Snakecharmer's gun safe problem.

In Mobile?

That thing would be a nice cistern with all the  seepage from being so far below the water table. Still awesome though.

Water is a great natural camouflage and defense!

Austin doesn't do basements.  Some parts because the water level is 3 inches below the surface, others because the bedrock is (seriously, I went to bury a pet and hit rock everywhere, finally finding a spot where a little sledgehammer work got me down two feet).  Even the places they could put basements or half-basements, they generally don't.  At the southern edge of Tornado Alley, and no basement.

Here in Illinois it seems like all of the McMansions have basements.  I think that any place that can get hit by tornados and can otherwise dig down far enough will have a higher frequency of basements.

I was once told that the frequency of basements was related to the depth required for the foundation to be below the frost line (i.e. if it's in a cold climate, the foundation would need to be deeper.  If you have a deep foundation, it's easy to just have a basement.)

I'm not sure if it's true or just an urban myth, but I've see far fewer basements as the climate gets warmer.

Oh the joys of illegal basements in La Jolla.
