Title: Warhammer 40k Armageddon
Post by: IainC on November 26, 2014, 08:10:46 PM
This was released recently and I (obviously) bought it. It's Panzer Corps with Warhammer 40k units and set in the iconic Battle for Armageddon campaign - Commissar Yarrick vs Waaagh Ghazghkull. If you know Panzer Corps then there's no big surprises in store for you. If not then your first thought on loading the game will be 'how did I just travel back to 1995?' You don't play a Panzer Corps game for cutting edge graphics or for modern UI standards, you play it because you know exactly how many rivets the front glacis of a Leman Russ has and what the difference is between a Shadowsword and Shadowblade. You can also probably spell 'Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka' without looking it up.

It's not the 40k tabletop game, it's far more oldschool than that, this is the 40k game that Avalon Hill would have made back in the day. This is the paper map and stack of cardboard counters game that came in a box which needed to be the size of a VCR (remember those?) because the rulebook was as thick as a telephone directory (remember those?). It is fun if you have a TBS itch to scratch or if you are a serious 40k fanboy. If you've never played a Panzer Corps game however the learning curve will be brutal.

I don't understand about a third of the terms used in that post, so it's probably a safe bet to pass on this then!

Reminds me somewhat of Rites of War, but more in-depth.

This feels like something I would love, but It's just too pricey at the moment and I have too many games to play already.  Hopefully it'll be at a deeper discount at the end of the year or during the Spring sale when I have less going on.

I would have loved this 10-15 years ago. I feel as if I've burned myself out on strategy games, can't enjoy them near as much as I used to. But it looks like a pretty decent 40k game, and the world needs for good 40k/fantasy games.

Rites of War used the same engine. The main difference apart from the campaign is that the art styles changed a lot at GW (and thus in GW licenced product) in the last 15 years. When Rites of War came out the GW studio was just coming out of a primary colours and cartoonish characters phase. They were in the middle of transitioning to the more familiar Grimdark stuff we know today but Rites of War was still locked in on the bright palette.

Also Armageddon uses a lot more unit types, they haven't limited themselves to only Epic tabletop units but have dug into the Forgeworld catalogue too for armour variants and specialist vehicles.
