Such an awesome thing for her to do, but I don't have the heart to tell her...

Tell her what? I'm missing something, I know it.

I'm guessing the thing left in it's original condition was worth more?

I have no idea about collectibles.

Saw Muse tonight.  They definitley deserve the accolades for their live performances.  Best show I've ever seen, that's for sure.

Wish I had a lens that went lower than f4.5.  The distortion on High-1 is really visible.   Heartbreak

It was a good show, saw them a couple of weekends ago. Here's a short video clip from my iPhone:

I kinda sorta figured, but I have no idea about he items history. For all I knew he made it himself.

I was working on panning shots (and other shots involving motion) this weekend.  This was my first (and best) attempt:

It's funny how fast it makes it look like he's going (which is kind of the point of the technique, I guess).  In reality, I'd guess he was going little faster than walking speed.   cheesy

Yea, that's a cool technique.  But uh.  The background.  It's cool because it's blurry and all.  But it's still four fat rednecks and a Pontiac.

I've been carrying around my camera recently but I haven't actually taken a real photo yet. I did manage to drop my camera though, here's showing it still works...

I like the idea and the execution kubodhi. The bit in the bottom right I find a bit distracting (clone out?). I think it might make a difference if you stop your lens down, then the OOF highlights might appear a bit more circular.

Glad your camera still works!  Dropping photo equipment can be very scary.  The shot with the wine glass was kind of a test run of sorts, so I appreciate the advice (as always).  If I were going to stage it seriously, I would likely have a more uniform backdrop and bring the entire wine glass into better focus (step one would be stopping my lens down a bit as you suggested to widen my DOF).  This was done in about a 20 minute window before my photo class, so I couldn't stage it quite as completely as I would have preferred.

I like this. I've been trying to replicate this sort of shot which I have seen taken on the NY subway. The trains on the tube just feel a lot less photogenic though, but having seen this I'll have to have another go.

Also kubodhi, loving your work, more please!

A couple of questions for you, then.  First, did the post-processing you settled on get the shot closer to what you saw with your eyes, or does it just turn you image into something brighter and more vivid in this case?  Second, did the post-processing you settled on blow out your sky in this instance?  I'd like to see the rest of the image to see how it affected the lighter areas.

I was trying to get closer to what I remember seeing... with just a touch of enhancement on the purple & white of the blossoms.

I took these back in April, and I was still hesitant to use anything other than the "P" setting, so the camera chose a lot of things for me.  I also hadn't learned about white balance adjustment, and this is actually the set that my sister taught me about it after seeing them.  You can see how yellow everything is because I was still on Automatic.  It was about 2pm and the light was really, really harsh that day.

The sky was completely blown out as you can see here, and I managed to get the blue back into it.  I was surprised at how awesome a little bit of work from a guy who's never had a class on it can do with the program.

ED: yeah, Musashi, my daughter prefers the original version as well.  It's just really, really yellow and the blossoms were much closer in color to the processed photo.  It's part of the reason I took the picture, they were so vibrant and vivid it made my head swim just looking at them.

Lightroom's also proving  really, good at removing noise from high iso shots.  It doesn't show as well on these resized versions of pics I took at the MUSE show, but the original was really, really grainy since I had to shoot at 1600 iso.  You lose some detail, but I'm not planning on printing photo posters, here.

Before:
After:
I should mention I'm also working off the .jpg files, not the RAW data. I didn't start snapping RAW when I shoot until a few weeks ago, so I really only have a few to play with, and those are on the wife's machine due to space constraints on my 5 year old clunker.

I don't hate it, I just think it's way too yellow and doesn't represent what I saw.

As for getting rid of the power lines, that would require both knowledge of a shop program and something newer than my 1999 copy of PaintShop Pro 6.0 to do it properly.  Based on previous experience anything I tried would only ruin the print.

I'm going to chime in and say I prefer the After version. I'm with you though Merusk, I'm learning lightroom and the main thing I'm finding is to take whatever I change and usually dialing it back about 10% gets it where it should be. I think it is easy to overcook your pictures, I know i do it (usually by adding too much contrast).

Instead of processing the entire capture, you could always try selecting just the foreground (non-sky) elements and applying the same adjustments.  Keep your blue sky while color-correcting your subject.  It's not necessarily simple to do, but it's probably a step in the "ideal" direction for a shot like this.

Beautiful either way!

That's awesome.  Did you have a telephoto lens or were you actually that close?

If the ExIF is correct, it was shot at 23mm - which means he was very close.  ;)
