Went for a walk along the Erie Canal yesterday, lots of beaver lodges built out of whatever was at hand. I've never seen them build out of anything but wood before, there was at least a dozen in the couple of miles we walked. Also, though the parents scattered at the sound of approaching humans, one lil guy hung out nomming on some good beaver noms until some woman with a dog came along. Also saw a dozen turkey vultures looking for some carcass we could smell along one part of the trail, didn't get a good pic of them circling, though.

Welp I spent last week diving up in the Sound of Mull and had a great if tiring time and took a load more photos. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't take very many photos above the water because it was really beautiful where we were but the camera housing proved difficult to wipe dry about the lens so most of my photos on the boat have water droplets in front of the lens. The rest of the time I just forgot to take my camera or was driving (some really spectacular drives around there, even if I'd never driven on single track before and there were many sharp bends with sheer drops). Still getting used to doing this but I feel I'm starting to get the hang of adjusting stuff in photoshop to get colours coming through. Also pics spoilered for size.

Here's the cannon from a Cromwellian warship sunk just by Duart castle. Sadly most of the wreck was covered in sand to preserve it so there wasn't a huge amount else to see.

This anemone was actually on the back of a sizeable scallop, which was the only reason that shellfish escaped harvesting. We ate well that night.

Lighting on this one wasn't great, it's being provided by someone's torch who it proved very difficult to explain to that he should just shine the very powerful focused beam directly on what I was photographing. I've got some shots with flash but they seemed very flat compared to this. Can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the 'aura' on the nudibranch eggs.

This little guy just looked really cute.

I'm sure I'm going to have all sorts of fun figuring out how all the settings work, but I already love that in its automatic mode I was able to take a photo that sharp with  shitty light and no tripod.

Oh hay, can you get me detail shots of that, or did you take more or do you have them somewhere?

I've got a few more (and in higher res), mostly of the Round Tower, although that's my favorite of the bunch and the only one I took from that particular angle.  Once I get home and have better internets I'll probably be uploading the full set.  Anything in particular you're looking for a shot of?

Texture bases and details of openings and such as well as any adornments. As you can imagine, I don't have any castles around me :)

Even lighting and parallel shots. Higher the better. You would be helping me out a great deal, all the stone work around me has to modern of a feel to it.

If you have them or have accesses.

I just got me a 12 mp camera and have been hitting the area near me for texture stock. PM me and we can work something out if need be.

This is the hotel I've been staying at in Windsor.  Not quite as posh as the castle, maybe, but since it's on the company dime I'm not complaining.

We fucking love Gov. Patterson. Here's a few shots from Pixley Falls, the first small hike my fiancee and I did together. Pics taken on sunday, because today it's closed, along with a bunch of other regional parks and many others have reduced services and hours. Honestly, the main reason I don't have an abiding hatred for upstate NY is the amazing parks, we buy a pass every year. At least...we used to. They chopped everything after we had this year's passes. The third shot shows that trail maintenance hasn't been done at all this season.

I (used to) love hiking up the slate falls of all the little tributaries (the second shot is halfway up one, she takes the trail path around the side :) and it's great swimming. My family used to camp at their campgrounds all the time.

Anyway, starting to feel the need for the next step up on the camera ladder. Given the dappled sunlight and much of the trails being in forest, I was getting much more comfortable messing around with the manual settings, even without a tripod. We've discussed getting an elph-style pocket camera and maybe a high-end P&S or low-end DSLR ($ being the main factor). I'm still angling for a new droid phone instead of a pocket camera, the monthly fees are way too steep imo.

I love the light on that first picture!
It's funny how much of that is just being there at the right time under the right conditions. We were up on Mt Battie in Maine and the sunset was pure crimson and sent violet and peach through the entire sky, reflected by an opposite cloud bank and also by the harbor. Best lighting conditions I've ever seen, there were several professionals there shooting. Got some great pictures of my fiancee through several phases of the light changing.

That first pic could easily have been an amazing rainbow like the one I posted from Trenton Falls (last year?). So it goes.

I was lucky enough to be in NYC for a couple days this week. Good times! Sadly, the MET was closed, but I did check out the Museum of Natural History. Here's to cell phone cameras.

I thought that too, and in a good way. The Journey to the Stars movie they showed inside the planetarium was fantastic. I felt like I was zooming through space in a glass elevator.

Got some visitors walking into my yard while taking the garbage out last night.  We live nowhere near a pond and about 1/4 mile from a creek, so they were just out strolling, apparently.

I bet that duck in the middle gets teased by all the other ducks for being so different.

I think Apoc's neither referring to the female mallard on the left or the male one on the right, but the juvenile female homo sapiens in the middle.
