Photography has had a long-running argument between the "no manipulation" crowd and the "final image is everything" camp. Dates back to the Ansel Adams days and before, with some saying that dodging and burning an image to enhance imperfect exposures is wrong all the way to those who composite images from multiple negatives (which lead to some of the Photoshop arguments).

I tend to believe the "no manipulation" crowd is full of horseshit.

Yep, the "no manipulation" shtick is BS, as film purists are manipulating the hell out of the processing through pushes and burning.  And this is from a film purist.   Ohhhhh, I see.

The fact is, no matter how much I love film (the look, the smell, the process), digital is easier, faster and cheaper.  Hell, it's likely even more environmentally friendly.  I rejected digital until a few years ago, but I was always a die-hard Agfa film guy.

Art is art whether you like it or not.
Yeah. Art teachers. Just shit on their desk and call it a commentary on the postmodernistic impossibility of impactful design.

Went on a day trip to the Oregon coast on Sunday. Seaside - Depoe Bay (mmm Sea Hag), and the stops along the way. Ecola, Cannon Beach, Twin Rocks, Oceanside, and Lincoln City.

From the Seawall at Depoe Bay.

Pretty. The horizon looks pretty level, did you take that with a tripod or did you fix it later?

That's a fantastic picture of the coast. I love how you captured the gunmetal grey of the pacific at that time of day.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Neither. I had to fix #7, it was off level, but I liked how the angle of the sun brought out the texture of the ocean, so I thought it was worth it.

Great colors in that, and the gradual fade to nothingness. Only thing that could've made it better would be if it were pristine snow with one set of footprints leading to the end of the dock and not coming back :)

Here's one I took of my boy last night. I call it "Obey the Foot"

On a technical note, I was trying to learn the camera settings and steady shooting as discussed in the tips thread. Made some progress, I don't think this shot was /too/ bad. I got lucky, he rarely sits still long enough for the exposure time these shots were taking, I've got a few funny ones of him yawning through a long exposure...

Nice shot Sky :)

Try sticking a flash ontop of your camera and bouncing it off the ceiling in TTL mode. Then you're only 1 step away from flash/ambient balancing and *true* control over the look of your photo  awesome, for real

And VDL, it's 7am here, like 3 hours before I can usually eat and that has made me hungry! What kind of cheese do you use in your cheese sauce?

I use a combo of sharp cheddar, Gruyère and Parm Redge, but the original Hot Brown Mornay sauce is only Parm. I think using only Parm makes a grainy Mornay.

God that sounds delicious. I thought I'd got the hang of cheese sauce, after 20 years of cooking, but now I see I am but a cheese padawan.

All the "food people" I know love Gruyere as their melting cheese. VDL confirms this fact. It's like how everyone insists on using prosciutto in everything now instead of bacon. Too bad it's all freaking expensive.

Gruyère is a great cheese for cooking. But it seems to do much better when combined with something sharp to bring more flavors out.

Now I want to make smoked salmon quiche again. Gruyère and aged swiss with a boatload of salmon. mmm Damn you thread!

I love Edinburgh's Old Town at night.  It's got that whole Jekyll and Hyde/Burke and Hare gothic thing going on.  Though I doubt if Jennifer would be delighted at such evocations...  Just a camera-phone, of course.

I spent a month in Edinburgh about a decade ago while in school, and I fondly remember wandering around parts of the town that you must be describing.  I was drunk, too.  We were a big international group, and man did we love partying in Edinburgh.  Most beautiful city I never saw during the daylight hours.

Swiss Gruyère and aged emmental. Without holes and with. Here in the land of 'Merka we call that Swiss cheese with the funny holes 'swiss cheese'
