So I'm sure many of you remember the Viking Sci-Fi movie from the old Box Office thread.  I think it's safe to say that not many of us were really expecting any sort of US theatrical release.  You can imagine my surprise then when I got some trailers and posters in this week, and some e-mails essentially telling me "you're booked to start showing this on the 23rd, so you've got about a week to promote it".  Apparently it's only going to be in limited release, but if for whatever reason if you've been wanting to see this, keep an eye out next week.

Here's the list of cities from what seems to be the official site:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Washington D.C.
  • Dallas, TX
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Boston, MA
  • Houston, TX
  • Seattle, WA
  • Miami, FL
  • San Diego, CA
  • Detroit, MI
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Orlando, FL
  • Tampa, FL

Nothing from Las Vegas there.

Dear Diary,
Jackpot!

movietickets/moviefone both show it opening in vegas and only vegas on the 23rd.  I might have to make a trip to Dallas to see it this weekend though, as it might pull a War, Inc. and go straight to DVD.

Monday afternoon is usually when my theater receives its final bookings for the coming Friday, at which point we come up with our movie showtimes.  Depending on when we finish the schedule, they typically won't show up online or on things like moviefone until Tuesday.  This holds true for a lot of theaters.

Fandango has no info I can find on where its actually opening. The movies website is less than useful in this regard as well. If I gave two shits about openings in India it might be useful...but I dont care.

I saw this last night.  I enjoyed it.  I kind of wish they'd played around a bit more with the notion of this being the origin of the Beowulf story (which they were obviously going for), but the nods they did have in there were good.

Still waiting for a movie that depicts iron weaponry in a remotely accurate fashion.  Bah!  If they'd done it right in the earlier parts of the movie, the "we need better metal" bit later would have been much cooler.

Ron Perlman was in it far too briefly.

Loved the GrendelMorewen or whatever it was called.  The special effects had their share of seams but the design was very cool.

Not a bad movie, needed a sex scene though.

The special effects were nice, but the ending left much to be desired.

As well, so the hero commits genocide and then decides to finish the job... that kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.

It's not like he had any other great options.  It was either that or take off and let Grendel and its brood eat everyone on Earth.

Not bad, I agree. Besides Beowulf/Aliens/Pitch Black/what have you, this also reminds me of a Ray Liotta movie made a while back, called No Escape. Can't explain why. Same feel to it, I guess. Very different plot though.

Movie is good shit but it seems kind of disjointed. The side  plot with Ron perlman was sort of pointless. I really liked the special effects and the scene where he is swimming down to the sunken ship.

Watched this the other night. Thought it was utter dross. Badly scripted, terribly acted (WTF was John Hurt doing?), awful plot. The only decent thing in it was that the monsters looked kinda cool.

1/10, would not watch again.

Just thought, odd coincidence, my real name is Sam and my parents (hippies that they were) have claimed that they named me after Samwise Gamgee but that the registrar either misheard them or thought it was an inappropriate name and changed it to Samuel without their knowledge.

Maybe you and I are some kind of weird fictionally-linked opposites. If your real name is Apocrypha then, well, you've got parents who are more bonkers than mine  why so serious?

Vaguely related I actually liked the Christopher Lambert Beowulf movie quite a bit, not sure if that was the version someone mentioned above.

vampirehipi23: I would enjoy a book written by a monkey and turned into a movie rather than this.
