Apparently french is spoken very differently in Quebec and France. Who knew?  I wonder if someone from France thinks the Quebec french sounds like a southern US hillbilly's english does to the rest of the enlgish speaking world? |

Outside of Quebec (and some parts of New Brunswick) theres very little, if any, reason to learn French, other than for job requirements. The only contact I've had with French Quebeckers is from the people I work with. There are a lot of them in the military compared to the overall population (about 33% in the military compared to about 20% in the general population of Canada). Also, if the French from France think French Quebeckers are hillbillys, I'd hate to know to what they think of the Acadians, with half of their sentences starting in French and ending in English. |

About a quarter of our intentional program in Japan was Canadian students, with a healthy chunk of people from Quebec. They would always make fun of each other endlessly (was very amusing for us Americans ). Its actually worst than a hillbilly type accent. From the way its described to me, they speak an archaic old form of French, as though it didn't evolve over the last 500 years. Its basically like if there was a country were everybody spoke Shakespearean English none stop. So for them its like talking to a LARP'er who will not break character ever. |
