Ahhhhhh! It's the beginning of the end....of my bank account having something in it. I'm in for Sam and Max, and I really do think that this year I'll brand one side of my wallet "Property of Steam" and the other side "Property of Amazon." 

Also, Steam is following in Amazon's footsteps a little bit (and possibly others before them) by giving random winners the games on their wish list. It's simple, but I always like that sort of a contest.

$9.99 for Borderlands seems like a good price point to check it out...

I had the same trouble. New Vegas was the only thing that immediately came to mind even, and I just sort of padded out the rest of my top 5 with stuff I've been putting off trying or only would want if I got for free, heh.

Yep, exactly what I did, Civ V, New Vegas and 3 games that I would play if I got for free that currently cost over $30, but probably wouldn't care about otherwise.  :oh_i_see:

I just had to reorganize the list I already had, added a few new things. My top 5 are New Vegas, Mafia II, Gothic 4, Divinity 2, Deus Ex 3. Thought about Dead Rising 2 and the new Witcher as well. Couldn't put the Anno 1440 gold version in the wishlist, it's just a steam bundle and counts as two separate games :(

Tempted by the Alpha Protocol deal, but I just dropped $15 on WoW today, I figure AP will show up in the xmas deals.

I'm seriously considering alpha protocolBOUGHT and I'll also be getting racetear on the last day. 0.27s in the video really sums up this game - your automatic response to a civilian getting too close is to shove his head through a car window. This isn't a button you press, this is just what your char does when a guy gets too close.

I'd hold off on DeathSpank; the second one, Throngs of Virtue, is coming out soon, and I'd think maybe there would be a bundle deal thing in the future.

Good advice on Deathspank. I do indeed plan on buying it. But yeah, I can wait for a bundle deal. Which will likely pop up come Christmas.

I even budgeted for Steam's Christmas Sales crap this year and I've still gone over-budget on games this year because of these deals Steam keeps throwing at me. Throw in the inevitable spending on the Christmas sales and I'm going to be about a year behind on shit to play, with a bunch of big games coming up (Wither 2, for example) that I'll want. I have picked up the Story Pack and Defense Grid. Very tempted to pick-up a a few others, but most other games I have been interested in are a bit more console-centric (Batman, Alpha Protocol) . I have been burned trying to play some of those through steam before (lost planet, deadspace).  I have been half-ass interested in trying out Cities XL and it has been "on sale" a couple of times in the last few months.  But come on....$29.99? Not picking you up to you are $9.99.

This days sale feel rather meh. Some reason I'd expect today, being Black Friday, to have the most interesting sales, but this doesn't seem all that more spectacular than the other days sales. Well, at least we get two more days of sales like this.

Oh, todays pack sales are kind of nice, for those lookin for gifts. DoW II expansion if you happen to know alot of people who have the first but the not expansion. (IE, people who were gifted the original copy when the Gold Pack went on sale awhile back)

And Portal. Because if you know someone who hasn't played this game, this would be the perfect time to gift them it. I'd gift Portal to my grandmother.

You'll see Burnout cheaper at xmas, I think I paid $5 or 7 for it. Really fun racer, already got my money's worth out of it.

Got the Kings Bounty Plat Ed. I'd played the demo for Armored Princess and liked it and was waiting for the bundle to go on sale. Now I bide my time for GOG to drop a DnD bundle...I know they will....

So, anybody know how Patrician IV is?  I'm tempted, but know nothing about it (or any of the other games in its franchise).

I've heard that it is monotonous and frustrating.  I was a fan of Patrician III, which was a fun economic simulation of the Hanseatic League, but from what I've heard this one is too wrapped up in drudgery and an endless treadmill of profiteering that doesn't really go anywhere.  It's still vaguely tempting at $10, but I think I'd rather just get Mount & Blade if I'm going to spend that much today.

Don't buy mount & blade complete. Mount & Blade: Warband is a replacement/addon for the first. Buy Warband only for $7.50 since it's on sale. That's the only thing I'm interested in today.

Bought the indie pulse pack yesterday since i've been watching to try those music games for a while anyway.  Thats the only thing I've actually purchased so far.  Even though there have been a bunch of tempting things, I realistically don't even have time toplay everything I already have, and won't for a long time so these indy/toss away games are the only thing worth getting for me.

Gotten the Indie Pulse pack, L4D2, and The King's Bounty games for $20.  So far, L4D2 will give me at least $20 worth of fun.

On the other hand, screw Steam, and their irresistible sales, sucking my wallet dry all the time.  I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 gigs worth of games from Steam, and I don't think I've finished more than 2 of them yet.

Ah well... my Code for Warbands seems to be bugged. I need a 4x4 digits code to unlock and Steam gives me a 5x5 one.

I feel like such a bad person for getting all these Indie bundles for like 90% off.

It's still better than pirating them like many do. 

Think of it this way.  Most of these games have already sold the vast majority of copies they'd have sold for full price.  The market is mostly tapped out, either due to maximizing early sales, or for lack of name recognition.  Dropping the price down to the $1-5 range means that a lot of people will impulse buy it, which instantly gets them god knows how many sales, and name recognition, since now people have heard of you.  Given how small some of these teams are, if even 100,000 people buy the packs for $1 a pop per game, that's still going to be around $50,000 in profit, assuming Valve is even taking anywhere near a 50% cut (which isn't likely).  That's not insignificant for a 2-3 man team, and I'd bet that the sales numbers are probably even higher than that.  That's on top of the utter lack of publisher fees and media costs if you're only pushing a game out online.

So in short, no, I don't feel bad about buying indie games for $1-3 if I wouldn't likely have bought them otherwise.

Is Aliens vs Predator any good? I enjoyed the old games for the fun and varied gameplay.

We also know it gets them word of mouth purchases from friends at full price.  Really it's advertising over a popular digital distribution system which pays the indie for the privilege.

The new treasure hunt/achievement hunt/discount games/chance for winning is powerful.

I think they may technically be running afoul of game and prize law. 

It is fairly shady, I agree.  I think they'll give everyone a free entry by doing something with thier account, but the extra three chances require purchases and that doesn't sit well with me. 

I was hoping for the same holiday sale we had last year... guessing that's off the books for this one?

I remember reading somewhere that something in the contest details of this one outed that the Christmas sale was starting on the 20th.  So it looks like it's still probably on.  I'd go looking but I'm lazy.

God damn, this event and the Black Friday sale have caused me to buy so many indie games.  They keep showing all these games that cost very little money (when on the steam sale) and yet look cool.  Looks like I'll try another damn one.

Honestly, if not for the sale, I wouldn't have looked twice at AaAaaaAAAa! or however you spell that, and I"m glad I did.  It's easily the best $2.50 I've ever spent on a game.  It's like someone took one look at Mirror's Edge, realized the game mostly sucked, and distilled it down to falling through neat looking environments, since that's the bulk of what I ever did in Mirror's Edge, at least.

Oddly enough, that's the same thing that made the browser and iOS versions of Mirror's Edge so good :awesome_for_real:.

Weird, I had kind of the opposite experience.  Figured I'd try it for $2.50, played it a bit, got the treasure hunt achievement and probably won't play it again.  Decided if I want to jump off buildings and stuff I'd rather just play Mirror's Edge.   :oh_i_see:

I'm half tempted to buy the pc version for the mods though, but I think it's probably best if I don't.  I already own too many games as is without replaying a long ass sandbox game I've mostly beaten.

I bought two indie packs and wasn't really all that sucked in by any of the games.  Then again, I've never liked platform games either.  I think I'll stick to sim/RPG games from now on.

I like the indie games they are promoting, I had a good time with Beat Hazard last night and was definitely worth the $2.50. JC2 was on my wish-list anyways so at $7.50 I've found it to be worth it, I don't know if I'd say it is worth full price yet or not, but definitely a decent time at $7.50

Football Manager 2011 is $27.99 until Dec 20th.  At this price, I couldn't resist.

I'm having the opposite reaction.  Shatter and Beat Hazard were sitting on my list unplayed until this contest, and I'm probably never playing either of them again after this.  I mean, it's basically Asteroids/Breakout, you can't make it more EXXXXXTREME or whatever by wobbling the camera around and making everything neon, it just makes it frustrating when I can't see what the hell is going on because I apparently haven't slammed enough Mountian Dew to be able to differentiate enemy bullets from the goddamn orgy of random flashing sparkly shit that fills the screen.

It would be one thing if the objectives were something like "mess around with this game for an hour," but no, they're all like "get a score of X in survival mode" where getting a score of X is generally taking me an hour or more of playing the same goddamn level over and over again.  Having to reach some kind of cumulative score or something I could cope with, but this stuff is all "aww, missed it by three points, go back to the beginning and start AGAIN" which is a great way to turn what could be a fun time killer into a frustrating tooth-gnasher.

Try using different music?

They certainly are seizure-inducing milestones.  I found droplitz and Beat Hazard challenges relatively easy.  Beat Hazard is frustrating at first until you rank up a bit.  Once you level up you will get more lives, bombs, increased multipliers, etc.  I made the mistake of using a mixture of Led Zeppelin I and II instead of some techno tune.  Lots of pauses in Zeppelin that make you ineffective for extended periods of time.

Shatter on the other hand took me at least a couple of hours.  Very challenging, and many complaints on the challenge.  Apparently they have admitted that it may be a bit high.  I turned my resolution way down and it seemed to help a bit, but it mostly came down to luck.  I felt like rage quitting a couple of times on this one - except I was stuck staring at the flashy lights like hypno-toad.

Sitting at 8/10 with two more challenge days left.  Shouldn't be an issue.

I'm having the opposite issue, I got the Shatter challenge no problem first try but I'm struggling with the Beat Hazard challenge.  But knowing that it will get easier if I level up some will probably help.

Also, yeah, Beat Hazard gets very easy once you get a few ranks.

Wow, first try on Shatter? Impressive - the first thought that came to my head was "Deaf, Dumb, and Blind; Sure plays a mean pinball"

Basically as you rank up in Beat Hazard you will start with full Beat Hazard and the ability to quickly get to the maximum 200x multiplier.  Best strategy just seems to be to not attack anything and build your multiplier to at least 100x and use bombs when you get in shit.  Then when you get to that point just go ape-shit destroying everything.

I finished with 11,100,000 points instead of 11,200,000 my first try on Shatter, and then proceeded to get worse scores my next 3 tries.

Sounds about right, I had to try the AAAHHHHH! challange probably a dozen times before I got it and it seems its going to be the same with Beat Hazard.  Also ironcily that song was in one of the challanges I did on RB3 last night. =P

Missed the Shatter challenge by 200 points on my first try, got it on the second try.  Though it didn't take very long.  All you do is select the Bonus level challenge, and then it has you play those three stages in a row (all of which go pretty damn fast).  If the score of those 3 together is higher, you got it.  Took me only a few minutes to to get it.

I'm currently sitting at 11 objectives met (I already owned several of the games they put up).  Must get 15 for the new hat...

I'm at 6/10 thanks to already having the L4D2 achieve.  I'm guessing I won't be getting 10.

Zombie Driver is definitely worth $2.50.  Old-skool overhead GTA clone with better physics and more killing.  Steam achievement is extremely easy to pick-up.  I ended up playing for a couple of hours after.  My major complaint being that if you die at the very end of a mission, you have to reset the level completely.  Which isn't horrible if you still got to keep some cash or something from your last run.

I was going to break my rule of not buying stuff for this contest and get Zombie Driver, but Steam decided to reject my credit card for no particular reason (not the first time I've had this problem -- their billing system is a special flower).  I'm going to take it as a sign.

I really enjoyed Zombie Driver and played it quite a bit, no idea why I don't have that achievement already and not at home to fix the problem.

You have to get a high enough score on a certain survival level, you won't get it in story mode.  I played it a bit last night and enjoyed it...but it made me a little motion sick.  I'm not sure why, I'm not one to usually ever get that from video games.

I don't even understand the contest. Seems like you have to complete sets of 4 objectives every so often (whenever they update it) or some shit. Most of which involve you buying another shitty game or two. The whole thing looks like a massive wank, and I am disinterested in their fucking about.

Do thing X on Steam or in one of the games on sale for the two days (possibly before the next sale, I don't remember).  Each is an entry to a drawing for 20 (?) games.  Complete 10 things and log into Steam on the 20th and be entered in to win 100 games.

I just got to ten.  But only because The last couple days had achievements for Civ5, Empire: Total War, and L4D2. 

I actually had a look again after posting and now I get it. Didn't help that it was during the busiest work period of the year and looked different to their typical sales, and more like a competition. I guess I'm just not excited with the presentation, the "contest" format doesn't do anything for me, since I probably have a better chance of winning the actual lottery. I prefer the usual sale format. Then again, Steam sales haven't done a whole lot for me since last christmas's 2 sales, when I bought most of the stuff I was interested in...

Out of all the stuff there, I think it'd only be Zombie Driver I'd be interested in anyway. I'd probably get $2.50 worth of fun out of it. Though I missed it, so it's moot.

I could've downloaded some demo and annoyed someone with spam on their profile, but my gumption got removed. So I guess at 8 boxes filled, I won't be getting 100 games. Oh, well. I guess I got a hat in TF2, if I ever play that again.

Logging in today gives an objective point.  I went ahead and wrote a comment and recommended Portal to finish out the ten.  Everything else I had through normal means.

Nope, came up one short. Logging in on the 20th gives the 11th, not the 10th, point. No biggie, I don't win stuff. I'm quite happy with an un-named f13 Santa bringing me Just Cause 2, it's wicked fun.

I had 7 this morning, and 8 when it rolled around to the "new day", so it counted as both for me. vov
