Top two are great. I feel like high key doesn't work as well when the subject fills less of the frame.

I agree. My plan was to concentrate on head/upper body shots but she wanted some longer shots as well to show her corsets and her dresses.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Love all this.
The martial arts photos are great, Moses.
I love ruin photography unreasonably. Though it's honestly scary to do sometimes.

Lovely macro photography - how are you picking your subjects? Just taking what you see on a walk? There was a light festival here in London a couple of weeks back. Most of it was pretty disappointing but I walked by this on the way home: 2018-01 Lumiere 004 by Aled Moses, on Flickr This is what it usually looks like:

Yeah, for macros, I consciously decide to go on a macro walk. If I'm looking for insects in the summer, I carry a couple of extra things--a spray bottle with sugar water (they'll often hold still if they land on it or get near it while they drink it up) and a little flashlight rather than a full size flash.

I really like the pink high key portraits at the top of the page here. Iain, would you mind if at some point I used some of your stuff for reference to paint from? I need to build up a stock of my own reference, but my camera skills suck and trying to get models and whatnot...
Not really deep into painting, as I'm only painting in class right now. But I'm focused on portraiture in charcoal this year and taking a color course in paint, so next year will likely be heavy on portrait painting to get my speed up, experience with color and different subjects, and a portfolio.
At some point I'd also like to get into atmospheric landscapes; moonlit clouds, foggy cities, snowstorms, etc.

Sure, go for it. I'm trying to get more into portraits and more organised stuff (rather than candid walkabout shots). Like you say it's hard to line up models - especially for me as my Slovak is still very bad. I try to push my technical boundaries and try something new with each shoot too which makes for a high rate of 'welp, that was a wasted afternoon'.

Do you know if there is a way to get a live view from a camera to the laptop (I'm using a MBP w/ Lightroom)? Tethering is great and all, but I'm trying to learn my setup with self-portraits and the ability to watch a monitor while I pose would be nice. I've got a few models lined up, one of which I'd like to sit before she graduates college and moves away (and unfortunately she's not a regular model, so probably not up for nudity). But I'd like to pay, because most of them model for a living.
And thanks, man. I'm going to stash a few in my ideas folder for when I get to that phase of the project.

I don't think so with tethering. But you can do it via the Canon Connect phone app. The problem with that is that the flash won't fire in live view. You can however wirelessly tether your camera to your phone to make the phone a remote trigger with live view and all the camera controls on the screen. You can basically access everything on the camera except things that require physical movement such as zooming. Fake edit: apparently you can't have live view on your MBP with Lr, but you can if you use the Canon EOS Utility.Re models and their limits. I always have a chat with my models before we even meet to talk about what they are up for, what their expectations are and what we are going to do in general terms. Quite a lot are fine with tasteful nudity or semi nudity and those that aren't sometimes become fine with it after a session or two once they've confirmed that I'm respectful of their personal space and security. Most of the stuff I do is with friends or on a TFP basis, so the shoot ends up being fairly collaborative - I want to do some of my ideas and they want to do some of theirs so we try and figure out what we can achieve in the shoot for both of us. If you're paying models and you specifically want nude/seminude work then, as long as you mention it up front in the pitch or ad, you should get responses from girls who are ok with that.

She's a coworker that I mentioned modeling to in passing because she has an awesome nose. She was asking about modeling at school and I did mention the nude thing. Kind of awkward, but I'm not bothered by it, as a male coworker has both sat for a portrait and done multiple nude life drawing sessions. Like I said, I want her to sit for a portrait, and if she stays in the area after school, develop it further because she's perfect for some Jeremy Mann/Nadezda style work. But I'm a few years out from doing anything that ambitious...
Thanks for the pointers, I'll play with those apps.

I was gonna go out to do some night shots in Times Square and I just thought to myself, "Why, this is something a million people have done". Not the greatest mindset for doing fun photography.

I thought you had a 70D? I seem to remember when I got mine, that you said something about having the same model.

OK, trying to follow the thread title, and take more pictures. To do that, I'm using the phone more because I'm lazy. I'm still not meeting that goal, but I am doing a lot more photography, which has me getting more interested in it which maybe means I'll do even more. I'm having some surprising success with the Pixel XL, after being horribly disappointed at seeing how beautiful the pictures the S3 took looked on the phone and how they turned into blurry messes when shown on a desktop. Here's my best recent one with the Pixel:

And here's one I took a few months ago. Shell is about 2 inches across, so not too bad for simple phone lens, hand held, no macro. The shell is from an abalone or muttonshell as I think it's called in Australia where I found it.

Hummingbirds! Great.
I like that shot a lot, Count. I think that's the spirit of it: picture your life. Doesn't have to be anything great--I think maybe the photo nerds are shitting this up too much with all our talk about whatnot. All photos taken by all devices at all times are interesting, by definition.

Thanks! I like it too and think it is pretty great. My objective with photography is to capture the beauty of what I see, both for my own enjoyment later, and to maybe brighten or enlighten the people who walk past it every day without noticing. Best success with the latter recently was stopping in the grocery store parking lot to take some pictures of an incredible sunset. Pictures were decent snapshot quality at best, sunset lighting is tricky and a parking lot full of cars doesn't make the prettiest foreground, but at least 10 people walking by/past/around me stopped and looked and enjoyed the view only because they saw me doing it. My challenge is trying to do a better job at capturing the beauty I see. Mastering the technical craft is necessary for that, at least as much with lower end equipment as with the really pricey stuff. And I know my biggest weakness (other than shaky hands) is in post processing. Like I don't do it! LOL But in the pursuit of improving, suggestions and constructive criticism are quite welcome.

That's a great philosophy, and how I got into photography, to help me appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Quick snap of London on a nice day:
