I can't believe War Face showed up as "new" on Steam this week. I remember rolling my eyes at the name when I saw it at E3.

In 2006.

Nothing in this post represents the views of my current or previous employers.

And since 2006, Warface has been pretty much a disaster everywhere it's been released outside of Russia.

From what I hear, it's one of the main reasons Crytek's in such dire financial straits right now.

A very large number of F2P games are going to crash and burn in the near future. A few years ago everyone decided that F2P shit, especially MOBAs and arena battle games, were the path to easy riches.

Off the top of my head there is an S-E Legacy of Kain arena shooter, a Dead Island MOBA, a Bandai-Namco arena fighter, a Bethesda arena fighter (Battle Cry?), Dawngate, a Crytek MOBA based on fairy tale characters (actually it's based on League of Legends characters that they changed the names of to pretend they were fairy tale characters.)

I'd be surprised if any of these do well.

That is one of the actual safest, most unnecessary predictions ever.

What's your point?

My point was that Crytek is just the tip of the iceberg.

Yea, I don't think that has anything to do with F2P shit. I think most of the companies have had undeserved success in the past and have no actual idea how to make good games.

The last original idea that came out of any of the companies you mentioned was back in the 90s. Since then they've all just been playing follow the leader. Bethesda just makes fantasy Grand Theft Auto now when they're not sinking hundreds of millions into an MMOG that was guaranteed to fail from day -1. Crytek only knows how to make nice textures. Deep Silver makes better trailers than they do games. Bandai Namco, lol. EA is EA. Squeenix never recovered from The Spirits Within.

From the WoW board: Rob Pardo is leaving Blizzard.

For those of us who don't follow Blizzard that closely, what is the significance of that?

Rob Pardo took over lead design of WoW after Allen Adham decided he wanted to write financial software, or something. Later Rob became Chief Creative Officer at Blizzard.

Yes, but why is he important?  Did he take over WoW while it was in development, or did he take over after a few years of success?  How much of the original vision was his?

He took over not very long before it was released (Allen left in 2004). None of the original vision was his from what I understand.

Just when you thought EA couldn't be any more greedy. EA is charging $4.50 for the XBox One demo of FIFA 14

The last episode of Wolf Among Us releases next week, for anyone who's been waiting for the whole thing to be done before grabbing it.  I've found the whole experience to be pretty enjoyable overall.  There's been a little unevenness in pacing of episodes lengthwise, but if you're not having to wait for the next episode, that shouldn't be a problem.

I think they spent more time on the music choice than they did the actual art.

Also, music was awful.

Quote from: IGN
Battleborn is "a fusion of first-person shooting and loot-grabbing RPG elements in a living comic book art style." The Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC game also features creeps, quick leveling, and unique heroes comparable to MOBAs like Dota 2 and League of Legends, all wrapped around a "dramatic story" in its five-player cooperative campaign. Of course, it will also feature 5v5 competitive multiplayer.

Looks like a combination FPS/DOTA thing.  Sounds like it could be fun to me.  Graphically, I'm not sure, it looks like a mess right now, but maybe it works better in game or something.

I think I already called dibs on all the vaults.

Did we make a list of reasons to buy a PS4?  I don't remember that we did.  If so, I'd sort it by date to see when I'll be buying one.

At the moment, I think between September and December would be the time.  Especially if the White PS4 is a technical increment over the launch unit, but considering the console landscape I doubt Sony feels any pressure to alter the system.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

The Last of Us Remastered (07/29/14)
Destiny (9/9/14)
No Man's Sky

Two of these 3 things can be held off on until they hit the PC. The Last of Us is whatever.

Sooooooooooooo

Games with no meaningful date:
The Evil Within

Here's a list with nothing on it: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=723415

The first thing I thought of when I saw that robotic thing with the bowler hat drift down was that this game was a MOBA. So basically, they are making Smite, only with random loot thing something?

Why?

The only other game to potentially add to the PS4 list is Dragon Age 3, if you're into that thing.  If I play it, it will be on a PS4 because I don't care for Origin on my rig.

Statement: I assume Destiny will be a console game, so I'll prefer to avoid trying to play it with kbm.

Affirmation: The wife is all about angsty man-on-man love, so Dragon Age is definitely on the list.

Subject change: Pokemon Y is pretty fucking good for a Pokemon game.  They made up for that Black/White 2 bullshit.

The Evo Super Smash Bros. Melee finals are coming up on Twitch. So much nostalgia, even though I recognize almost none of the competitors' names anymore.

CBS Interactive gaming site makes staff cuts, says "a few positions were impacted"
GameSpot

Consumer gaming site GameSpot has undergone a significant round of layoffs, GamesIndustry.biz has learned.

Now-former GameSpot reviewer Carolyn Petit confirmed the news in a series of posts on Twitter, saying, "Today was my last day at GameSpot. It was a dream to work there, and I'm very proud of the work I did. I walk out alongside some colleagues I am honored and privileged to have worked with. And I will miss working with everyone at GS so much."

GameSpot is the flagship gaming brand at CBS Interactive, which also owns Giant Bomb, GameFAQs, and onGamers. CBSi touts GameSpot as streaming 50 million hours of live gaming content every month, with 25 million monthly visitors across its gaming platforms.

The full extent of the cuts is not clear yet, but they extended beyond the editorial team.

[UPDATE]: A GameSpot representative acknowledged the cuts, saying, "GameSpot did some shifting of internal resources as part of our long-term content and user engagement strategy. A few positions were impacted."
