Phoenix Point (Xcom spirutal successor being developed by Julian Gallop) is now exclusive to the Epic gamestore.
The KickStarter backers have thrown such a fit that the studio is offering a free DLC season pass to backers.

Was it always supposed to be on Steam and they backtracked from that, or is it people just hating on the Epic Launcher?

Of course. But Epic store wasn't really a thing when they started the project. Still dumb. If you said you were going to give backers item X, you give them item X. They paid you for it.
These Epic store exclusives are starting to get annoying.

People never stopped pirating software. Giving a fuck about what launcher opens up when you click on the shortcut for the game would be about the dumbest reason for someone who isn't already pirating to start.

Giving a fuck about what launcher opens up when you click on the shortcut for the game would be about the dumbest reason for someone who isn't already pirating to start. Steam allowing a unified game collection with frequent deep discounts drastically reduced piracy. Why torrent a game when you can just buy it for $5 a year after it comes out? I know many former pirates, and many folks who still torrent movies/shows/music but just buy games on Steam. It's not about "what launcher opens up" it's about having a collection hosted on a service that is familiar and trusted. I also don't want 10 launchers running all the time, nor do I want to wait for a specific client to launch just to launch whatever game. As an aside, do people really launch their games from shortcuts? I launch all my Steam games from Steam, and only have shortcuts to my non-Steam games (which all have their own special launchers like Minecraft). I may be weird in this regard, I'm genuinely curious.

I tend to launch most games from Steam because that's where most of my games are. The games that aren't on Steam, I'll use a shortcut.

I may be weird in this regard, I'm genuinely curious. If it's something I play a lot of I use the shortcuts. Slay the Spire for instance I have a desktop shortcut for. Going from the Steam's store page to my library and then scrolling through to the game I want to play would take a lot longer than double clicking the icon on my desktop. It's part of the reason I'm baffled when people complain about other launchers. Also I think just about everything about Steam has gotten worse over time, from their store to their UI, to their sales no longer being as good. I have no idea why so many people are attached to it and wish it to never have any sort of competition that might inspire them to improve their service. And for most people I know who pirated games, they'd rather play the game now than wait a year for a sale. If piracy has dropped off a bit, I suspect that's more due to the "games as a service" trend that requires people to have an active account to log in with and also the F2P nature of some of the more popular game. People can't/aren't going to pirate Fortnite, Overwatch, or Apex Legends. Is it possible to pirate The Division 2 (asking for a friend)? Could I pirate Anthem or Fallout 76 if I want to see if they're as bad as I've heard? Speaking of Fortnight, Overwatch, and Apex Legends, they're some of the most popular games out there. Know what else they all have in common? They all launch from different services and aren't on Steam. The people complaining about that sort of thing are old dinosaurs like us here. The younger generation clearly doesn't give a fuck.

Ubisoft loads up their PC games these days with as much copy protection (i.e. Denuvo and VMProtect) as a modern PC can handle to delay the inevitable crack as long as possible so your "friend" may have to wait a month or so.

But I assume even then since Division 2 is an online only game that pirating a copy isn't really viable. Like at best you could maybe buy a discounted key from a somewhat less reputable site.

Uplay accounts are free and The Division 2 doesn't require a paid subscription to play.
Edit: To put it another way, if Ubisoft didn't think it would somehow be possible to play a cracked version of the game online they wouldn't have bothered to put all the DRM in in the first place. So they must believe it's at least theoretically possible to do so. And then you get in the "anti-cheat/crack" arms race like other online games are in right now.

Yes, but I assume you still need to be able to link a valid key to your Uplay account and that it checks when you log on. Even if you were able to get a hacked key, it might be fine if you just wanted to test the game out a bit, but might not be something you'd want to invest a lot of time in just in case you get banned.
Edit: Or to put it another way, even though Diablo III doesn't require a sub can you pirate it and play on the PC?

I really only play a handful of games at a time, so I can typically right click the Steam icon in my system tray and launch them from there; I don't need to minimize all my windows to get to my desktop. Their sales have certainly gotten worse, I'll give you that; I'm not sure what has changed about the UI at all. Fortnite and Apex Legends are bad examples, since they're free games; obviously, no one would pirate them. I agree that "live service" games and their popularity may have reduced piracy as well, but I certainly know several people who play a lot of single player games and buy them on Steam instead of pirating them. I don't really know if any of those other "live service" games can be pirated; keygens were certainly a thing many years ago.

Yes you can get a keygen for it and attach the key to your Battle.Net account and play it online.

Attaching a hacked key to your Bnet account seems like a really good way to get nuked from orbit. I'm assuming you create a throwaway Bnet account?

It's one of my favorite things. I hate a cluttered desktop, though I always end up with one. Steam is one of a handful of programs that lets me reduce that greatly. UPlay has worked pretty seamlessly with Steam, too. I launch stuff like Rocksmith and Far Cry from the aforementioned taskbar icon.

Pirating is such a pain in the ass. I pay $10 to stream a movie because I don't want to get off my ass and look for the disc.

All these 12-month Epic Store exclusives basically mean one thing to me; I'll just pirate the games if they hold interest to me. Between the Epic store being utterly inferior to Steam, I thoroughly dislike non-first party exclusive crap. Add to that the 40% stake tencent has in it? Meh.
The way Epic has been going at it so aggressively has also led to a bad taste; even games crowdfunded on the basis of being Steam releases have signed up now to be Epic Store exclusives, as they could refund every crowdfunder and still come out ahead, financially.

I like Steam and I dislike all the other platforms, so this makes me unhappy. With that said, it's time for Steam to drop the 30% share of the profit act. Now.

Apple margins are horseshit and they're horseshit on Steam also.
But this behavior from Epic is the actual fucking worst. Also, again, fuck China.

Chocobo's Dungeon for the Wii was just remastered/updated for the Switch. $40. I never got to finish the first, but will be snagging this one to take another stroll through it.
The weirdest part about it was a few weeks ago, I though about how well that game would work on the Switch... and here we are.

Yep, the same. It's the same game with updated textures, the ability to bring along a 'buddy' into the dungeon and some form of couch co-op that has been tacked on. There are no reviews yet, and I'm a few weeks off from being able to play it. Here's the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQb8Gf87GscEDIT: I'm 99% positive you recommended that game to me when I was first visiting F13. It's such a good game.

I was perusing Steam, looking for anything interesting and different when I came to a realisation. Developers who write cameltoe into their games are seriously sick and won't get a penny of $$ from me.

I'm not buying a single thing on the Epic Store given that their competition model isn't to make a better storefront with better curation as it is just to find the most anticipated titles and just throw gigantic piles of money to secure exclusivity (which isn't "competition" in the way that Epic defenders say it).
