I already have my digital copy  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly? Pre-ordered it forever ago. It's really, really good. Of course, I'm a bit biased as one of my favorite records as a kid had the Battle of New Orleans on it.

I wish the tour would come into the area. Given that there is a 'Boonville Stomp', he could come to Boonville. I'm way more upstate than that Woodstock show, and we don't like hitting shows south of Poughkeepsie because it's a fucking shithole down there. It's far enough that it would be an overnight and blech.

Wrong Booneville! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boonville,_California

We're generally pretty spoiled for tour stops around here so I'm sure I'll get a shot eventually.

Also I can't remember if I've posted them here but another band you'd probably like in a similar vein is Hillstomp:

Saw Stephane Wrembel last night. It's insane to have such world-class talent in our butthole of a town (Kruno Spisic was here last year).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3qdE7afpjI

He had a lot of great stories and musical examples. He followed the growth of gypsy jazz from its roots and outlined examples of the roots in later music, plucking out melodies and examining them. It was really almost a class in gypsy jazz, both me and the resident jazz virtuoso were blown away (and we consoled each other on our sore fingers later that night). At one point he was discussing Django's injured left hand and played Minor Swing with only two fingers ala Django. Holy shit!

And the kid on the percussion with his crazy tray, that was beyond amazing. He wore metal caps on his fingers and played a tray filled with a pie tin, a metal bowl, wood block, washboard and a couple cymbal substitutes made out of Idunnowhat. He had several solos and was just riveting.
Well, today ended oddly. Took a care package out to mom's house (she broke her arm a few weeks back) and she was nattering on about her friend's daughter's new husband and how they all would sit around jamming guitar and she told them how good I was and I need to meet them and blah blah, mom stuff. Tonight she pulls up a picture and it's THAT KID ON PERCUSSION I saw a few years back with my favorite guitarist. I literally listen to him every day in my truck. I say 'oh yeah, he played with Stephane, I've seen him a couple times and talked to him' (because I always try to chat up bands). My fiancee is like "NO!" and I call up a video of Stephane and she starts freaking out. My mother can't believe we know the guy, let alone that he's on the album of 'that...interesting music you listen to'.

So yeah...I'm going to have to get my chops together for the next time those kids are in town...it's going to be sheer awesomeness.

Weird how small the world is.

take one part Explosions in the Sky and add just a little dash of metal

Year of No Light - Perséphone

or as one tubes of you comment put it:  God Damn Right this song has +80% frost resist and 30-70 poison damage over 5 sec

Try Pelican if you like that, too.  Pelican reminds me of a metal iteration of Explosions.  Thanks for the above link, good stuff!

ya, Pelican is great stuff, though IMO they have been in a rut for several albums.  I imagine you have already heard of them but Russian Circles and the Red Sparowes?

I can't stand them, personally.  But you're right; that's pretty cool.  It makes a lot more sense why they played half a song with the pop kid.  We were all waiting to see them play and were a bit confused when they shared the stage for one song with someone who sang four.  Weird, but makes sense now.

Is this your first Superbowl? That's pretty much what it always is when they do this.. All along it's been BRUNO MARS w/ red hot chilli peppers. Bruno was the main thing, and RHCP was there by iniviation. Apparently Bruno really likes them.

Those first 2 albums of theirs are just brilliant moments in metal.  Production, skill in playing, and songwriting.  Maybe a little cheesy by some people's modern day standards (and King hasn't exactly ever been known for his subtlety) but for 1983-1984 it didn't get much better.  I still break those albums out periodically.

Been revisiting a lot of 60s stuff lately. Donovan did some great shit.

I finally got around to dl'ing this.  I'm glad I did... now I'm only missing their 2012 album.  I had to post this video though.  It's too funny and at one point it looked as if he set his armpit on fire.  Anyway:

Also getting into Harry Nilsson who I wasn't very familiar with.
