Who plays James Bond isn't as important to me anymore as they story and direction. I wish they would edge back just a little bit from the Action Extravaganza! philosophy and shoe horn in some plausable spy type stuff.
P.S. Does Eric Bana even have an English Accent?

Clive Owen, Jude Law, or Hugh Jackman all would have been better choices. But part of the problem with playing Bond is you probably won't be playing anything else for the next decade or two since you'll be making seveal Bond films.

Ok, so Bruce, I was just informed that the paper you linked to is one of the most unreputable newspapers in the UK. Far be it from you to take anyones word as gospel, never link to them again. This story had me enraged, and the possibility of it not being true leaves hope for the future. Here's a quote that I found at about 6 sources: Bana is reportedly still in negotiations with the producers of the movie franchise but it was hoped he would sign on for the 21st title in the series. So there we go, just like everyone else - he's still in negotiations. And here's a more interesting story.

Some sources have say he has the part. Other sources say he's still in negotiations. Well your thread title says "Eric Bana to be new James Bond." Go away, plzkthx. Edit: More than that, the only sources that say he has the part is that crap newspaper you referenced in the first post.

P.S. Does Eric Bana even have an English Accent? He's an Aussie, but like most actors from down under, he does every accent except his native one. I'd be surprised if he got this part though. Good actor, but the guy has like zero charm.

Wasn't George Lazenby Australian? Not that he made an impression on most people with his one Bond film... I thought he was ok, though. He left acting for quite a while and raced cars, instead. A very 'Bondy' choice. Not too long ago he married Pam Shriver... who I always thought was gay. I think a cleaned up Robert Carlysle would make a good Bond, though I wouldn't like to think he'd not be making other movies for a long period of time. I mean, really, maybe it's just me, but Bond movies aren't exactly a talent showcase.
As for the News of the World... great source of information. I believe the last headline I saw from that rag was, "Woman Gives Birth to Baby with Wooden Leg". Excellent stuff.

I consider Lazenby to be the second best Bond so far. Much better than that guy who came after Moore and just better at the role than Remington Steele.

Ones where I'm not comfortable making a fool of myself. Which, taking a cursory glance at the front page of this forum is... very few?

For a long time Bana was a comedian on a sketch show down here. I still have trouble imangining him as anything BUT a aussie accent.
I think he'd be ok for the role, least he's from the commenwealth (Hmm...wounder if a Canadian would ever play the role?).

Bana was excellent in Chopper, though doubt many people have seen that film.
But I can't believe a guy who made his name in Australia doing 'wog comedy' (sending up Greek Australians) could be the next James Bond

As long as he does some kickboxing, then I'll be happy.
Added bonus for a Michael Caton 'Tell him hes dreaming' appearance.

Bana was excellent in Chopper Don't know about the film, but the book is 100% great. The sequel, "How to kill friends and influence people" I think it's called, is also worth your time.

It better be fucking Clive Owen; after seeing Bana all naked and stupid in "The Hulk", I could never see him as James Bond.
Hell I'd take Hugh Jackman over Eric Bana....

I like Eric Bana myself, have liked him in everything he's done, but I'm not too sure he's the best choice for Bond. I'd have to agree with schild, Clive Owen is certainly the best choice I can think of.
But then, considering Die Another Day was the best Bond film since the one with Michelle Yeaoh and yet still wasn't as good as any of the Connery flicks, I'm all for just putting a bullet between the franchise's eyes and calling it a career.

My ordering of the Bond actors:
1. Sean Connery 2. Pierce Brosnan 3. Roger Moore 4. George Lazenby 5. Barry Nelson 6. Timothy Dalton
I have intentionally not included the Bonds from the Casinoa Royale "spoof" movie. Barry Nelson was James Bond in the Climax! TV movie version of Casino Royale and was passable. Timothy Dalton is a fine actor, but he simply was not a good Bond. It might as well be a different character in those movies.
Moore was my favorite when I was younger because I thought Moonraker was da bomb, but his other movies do not stand up as well. I thought Connery's unofficial Never Say Never Again was actually one of his best ones.
