I'm not going to linger here. Frankly I was mortified to hear my name was on the front page of anything.

For the past year, most of what I've done is VO scripts and straight prose, because the only resource I had to work with was me. Last year I ended up churning out the equivalent of a short novel, 65-70k words.

What opened this week is what I was originally hired for. The Living Lore system takes situations set up in the new webcomic (art by Nicholas Kole, colors by John Loren, updated 3x a week), and has players choose what happens through a voting system in the client. Playing games earns votes. The result of the votes has not yet been revealed, but I think I can say that aside from results being shown in the webcomic, they will be reflected in additions and alterations to the content within the game.

There's not a lot of "marketing" in the sense you mean going into DG yet. There's been two trailers, two trips to PAX (in the PC gaming room, not on the floor), and any other buzz you've seen comes from the CMs working their balls off to build up the community through Twitch, Reddit, and social media, or from people making themselves available to talk to gaming sites. The team is under 50, which for an EA project is miniscule. I said in the other thread that the budget has been described as "a rounding error for EA," and while a joke, it's also nearly true.

MOBA's should not have huge budgets. It kind of defeats the whole premise. I'm not sure they should have much set narrative either.

Congrats on the job. Have you played DG and if so, what can you tell us about it?

I just picked up Omikron for sale at GOG.  I don't know when I will be able to play it but I'm going to make a very strong effort.

Has anyone tried Xenonauts now that it's officially out? I've heard some good things about it, but it's kinda expensive for a gamble like that.

OpenXcom hit 1.0 as well if you have the original and want to try playing it again on a modern machine.

I actually have it. Didn't know it's out though. I can report in a few days if you can hold out so long.

If you like the managerial/tactical/transfer aspect of the game, Football Manager (2014 is the latest version and will probably be on sale any day now). If you like the more arcadey play as the man with the ball type of game, FIFA from EA Sports is the one to play. They also have a F2P version called FIFA World.

I operate under the assumption that any website that has more than say, 5 full/part-time paid staff members - assuming no actual "software development" takes place - deserves to fail.

Obviously I'm specifying that these people be actual staff members because Gawker Networks (and others) style of "pay per X views" doesn't count. You can't fire people that don't make money. Well, I guess you can and that would be hilarious, but whatever.

What's going on with these new games allowing you to mark enemies and see them through walls? I found it in Far Cry 3 and thought it was weird. Is it a thing now, in all open world shooters? I don't think I like it.

What the fuck?

There's no way GFWL shutting down was just a rumor, because it doesn't make sense that all these dev houses would put so much effort into migrating off of it just on a rumor.  These places *had* to have contacts that would be able to tell them they needed to do it or not to do it.

Good to see that Microsoft still doesn't have their shit together and has yet to learn any lessons.

Crytek In Deep Trouble – Adoption of CryEngine Not Good, it may go bankrupt.

Quote
According to Gamestar, the adoption of CRYENGINE is not going well and the word-of-mouth at GDC was negative. Strangely enough, CRYENGINE is currently one of the most optimized engines, so Crytek should really look into its subscription prices otherwise this amazing engine may never be used by other triple-A developers.

Well, Chris Roberts is already using the engine for Star Citizen. He might as well buy the entire studio, you know, "why not?".

EDIT:
Quote
Not only that, but Gamestar claims that the development of Ryse was catastrophic for the studio.

 why so serious?

Ryse catastrophic? Should've been payday considering how bad Microsoft wanted it. Must've sold the exclusive to MS for peanuts.

I bet it was all because of pirates.  why so serious?

Ryse looked like overly shineyshiney Quicktime mambo on a platform that was immediately hamstrung by decisions that literally shoved Microsoft's sweaty, hairy balls in consumer's faces. I'm not surprised nor upset that it flopped for them.
